Book Based On 475-Year-Old Horror Folklore Legend Sets First Ever TV Show

A new TV show will be based on the legend of La Llorona, a centuries-old folktale with roots stretching back nearly 500 years.

Horror fans probably know the story of La Llorona, also known as The Crying Woman or The Wailer. She was the focus of the 2019 movie The Curse of La Llorona, directed by Michael Chaves and produced by James Wan, a well-known figure in the horror genre. Despite appearing in several famous films and TV shows, one key aspect of her story hasn’t been fully explored yet.

Good news for fans of spooky stories! According to Deadline, Hulu is creating a TV series based on V. Castro’s novel, The Haunting of Alejandra. The book, which came out in April 2023, centers around a woman terrorized by the legend of La Llorna, and the show will follow the same plot.

I was completely hooked by The Haunting of Alejandra! It’s a really chilling story that mixes classic horror with some powerful social themes, and it’s steeped in fascinating Mexican folklore. The story follows Alejandra, a young lawyer who’s just starting maternity leave. At first, she thinks she might be dealing with postpartum struggles, but it quickly becomes clear that something much more terrifying is going on – she’s facing off against the legendary La Llorona, and it’s a fight for her life!

The legend of La Llorona originated around 1550 in Mexico City, or possibly even earlier with Aztec stories. Regardless of its exact beginnings, she’s typically said to haunt areas near water. According to the tale, La Llorona grieves for the children she drowned in anger, and those who hear her wailing are said to experience bad luck.

Although the legend of La Llorona has a rich and varied history across different regions, it hasn’t yet been the central focus of a continuing American live-action television series. While she’s appeared in international dramas, animated shows, and the reality program Surviving La Llorona, she hasn’t had her own ongoing American series.

La Llorona has appeared in many films and TV shows, often as a secondary character. For example, the first episode of the 2005 series Supernatural included a monster based on the legend, portrayed by Sarah Shahi. Riverdale also presented its own version of the story. Classic films like David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive and the popular Pixar movie Coco have featured elements of the La Llorona myth as well.

Steven Paul Martinez is the writer and executive producer of the upcoming Hulu original series, produced by 20th Television. He’ll be working alongside executive producers Eva Longoria and Cris Abrego from Hyphenate Media Group, as well as Gigi Saul Guerrero and Raynor Shima of Luchagore. V. Castro, the author of novels like Maria the Wanted and Tejano Tales, will also produce the series, titled The Haunting of Alejandra.
