Guillermo del Toro, known for his work on Frankenstein, has praised the Korean thriller No Other Choice.
Guillermo del Toro is a highly respected director known for popular and critically acclaimed films like Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, and The Shape of Water. His latest film, a new version of the Frankenstein story, was nominated for five Golden Globe Awards.
With the Golden Globes over, the Oscars are just two months away, and Guillermo del Toro is hoping his film, No Other Choice, gets nominated.
The director recently shared on X (formerly Twitter) that No Other Choice ranks among his three favorite films by Park Chan-wook, urging fans to “Definitely check it out!”
The film No Other Choice, featuring Lee Byung-hun as a desperate job seeker willing to do anything to get hired, received a remarkable 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This is 13% higher than the score for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.
The film features a talented cast including Son Ye-jin, Park Hee-soon, Lee Sung-min, Yeom Hye-ran, Cha Seung-won, and Yoo Yeon-seok.
The film No Other Choice received three nominations at the Golden Globes: Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture, Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy (Lee Byung-hun), and Best Non-English Language Motion Picture. However, One Battle After Another, Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), and The Secret Agent ultimately won those awards.
The movie received nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film at the Critics’ Choice Awards in January, but didn’t win either award.
The film No Other Choice has been well-received at several film festivals, such as the Toronto, Newport Beach, and Stockholm International Film Festivals.
The Academy Awards are scheduled for March 15th, and voters are currently deciding on the nominees. Guillermo del Toro likely shared his positive comments about the film No Other Choice to influence this stage of the Oscars selection process.
Because the director of Frankenstein is an Academy member, he has a vote in choosing the Oscar nominees. His recent praise for the film No Other Choice might sway other members when they make their decisions.
There are 15 films that made the shortlist in the category of International Feature Film.
The films competing for the award include No Other Choice, as well as Belén (Argentina), The Secret Agent (Brazil), It Was Just an Accident (France), Sound of Falling (Germany), Homebound (India), The President’s Cake (Iraq), Kokuho (Japan), All That’s Left of You (Jordan), Sentimental Value (Norway), Palestine 36 (Palestine), Sirât (Spain), Late Shift (Switzerland), Left-Handed Girl (Taiwan), and The Voice of Hind Rajab (Tunisia).
Only five of these movies will make the final cut when the nominations are announced on January 22.
Park Chan-wook’s film Decision to Leave was a contender for the Oscars in 2023, but ultimately didn’t receive any nominations. Now, with less than two weeks to go, Guillermo del Toro is waiting to hear if his film, No Other Choice, will earn a nomination. If it does, he’ll likely share the good news with his followers online.
