You can now buy tickets to see the final episodes of Stranger Things in movie theaters! This part of the final season, called Volume 3, will be available on Netflix starting December 31st, and will also be shown in select cinemas. The creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, have said the episode is about two hours long.
Fans can now reserve their tickets for the final Stranger Things episodes, which will be shown in select movie theaters on December 31st and January 1st. These screenings will begin at 8pm Eastern Time / 5pm Pacific Time at over 500 theaters across the United States and Canada – the same time the episodes become available to stream on Netflix.
The series finale will be two hours and five minutes long. Only the final episode of Stranger Things season 4 has been longer, running for two hours and 22 minutes. Every episode in both seasons 4 and 5 has lasted over an hour.
The first part of Stranger Things season 5 answered some fan theories, but many questions are still unanswered as the season continues, particularly about Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and the Upside Down.
The series finale will be two hours and five minutes long, giving it ample time to finish any remaining storylines from the previous episodes. Its length—longer than most films—also makes it suitable for a theatrical release, particularly because it concludes a story that has unfolded over nearly ten years.
As a movie fan, I always find it interesting when TV episodes get a theatrical release, but this Netflix thing is really different. Usually, Netflix keeps its original films strictly on their streaming service. They’ve made exceptions a few times – like with Rian Johnson’s Knives Out sequels and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein – giving those limited runs in cinemas, but generally, you won’t find a Netflix original on the big screen. This is a pretty big departure for them.
As a huge film and TV fan, it’s amazing to see just how much of a cultural moment Stranger Things has become – it’s easily one of Netflix’s biggest successes ever. Something incredible happened recently: all four previous seasons of the show were simultaneously in Netflix’s Top 10, which I heard is a first for any series! It really shows how much people are anticipating season 5.
Because Stranger Things has had such a huge impact on both Netflix and television, it’s fitting that the show will conclude with a special event: its final episodes will be released in theaters on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, in addition to being available on Netflix. This could pave the way for other Netflix series to get theatrical releases too.
