Fans are puzzled by a recent detail about Godzilla Minus One, but a scene from Godzilla: Final Wars might offer some clues. Currently, Toho is keeping most of the details about the next Godzilla movie a secret. The teaser trailer for Godzilla Minus One didn’t reveal anything about how Godzilla is returning or if any other monsters will appear.
Looking at past Godzilla films, it’s probable that Godzilla Minus One will differ from the previous movie and include a battle between Godzilla and another monster. The trailer hints at one potential opponent, but no official announcement has been made.
Fragments are floating in the air, surrounded by swirling blue energy. While Godzilla’s atomic breath is also blue, this energy feels different and doesn’t seem to be connected to his powers. This might be a hint about the monster Godzilla will be fighting, if there is one.
While SpaceGodzilla seems likely to appear in the Monsterverse, Toho’s other monsters rarely demonstrate this particular power. It’s also possible we’re overlooking the most obvious suspect, simply because people misunderstand what he’s capable of.
Yes, King Ghidorah Can Control Gravity
King Ghidorah is famous for his yellow lightning-like attack. While the beam shown in the Godzilla Minus One trailer looks different, it’s officially known as a “gravity beam.” It’s important to remember this is the established name for the attack.
It’s easy to think of the gravity beam as simply a powerful energy blast, but the film Godzilla: Final Wars shows it can do much more. In the movie, King Ghidorah – specifically, his evolved form, Kaizer Ghidorah – uses his gravity beams to lift Godzilla into the air during their climactic fight.
This power was actually demonstrated earlier in a Japanese theme park ride called Godzilla vs. Evangelion: The Real 4-D at Universal Studios Japan. However, Final Wars is still the only Godzilla movie where this ability is clearly shown on screen.
Although the Godzilla movies haven’t really shown it, King Ghidorah is capable of controlling gravity. If Ghidorah is the main villain in the upcoming Minus Zero film, Toho might finally explore this often-forgotten power and showcase a more complete version of Godzilla’s biggest enemy.
Godzilla Minus Zero’s Title Could Also Be A Ghidorah Hint
The brief glimpse of anti-gravity in the Godzilla Minus Zero trailer suggests King Ghidorah might be the main villain. While Godzilla Minus Zero seems like a logical title following Godzilla Minus One, it could also be a hint – “Monster Zero” is a well-known nickname for Ghidorah.
The names “Monster Zero,” “Monster One,” and “Monster Two” first appeared in the film Invasion of Astro-Monster. These were the codenames used by the alien Xiliens to refer to Ghidorah, Godzilla, and Rodan. This detail later inspired the title of the U.S. VHS release of the movie, which was called Godzilla vs. Monster Zero.
Fans have continued to call the creature by this nickname, and it was recently used in the movie Godzilla: King of the Monsters as a code name by the Monarch organization. It might appear again in Godzilla Minus Zero, potentially as the official name used by either the Japanese or American military to refer to the monster.
Right now, King Ghidorah appears to be the most likely villain in Godzilla Minus Zero. While it hasn’t been officially confirmed that Godzilla won’t be the only threat, the history of the franchise and the teaser’s hint at “a new threat” suggest we might see another monster appear.
