Timothée Chalamet stars in his new movie, Marty Supreme. The film, written and directed by Josh Safdie, features the Wonka actor as Marty Mauser, a well-known tennis player.
As a movie fan, I was really excited to see the early buzz for Marty Supreme. The directing and writing team – the same guys behind the incredible Uncut Gems – have done it again! It just dropped on Rotten Tomatoes with a fantastic 98% score from critics, based on 53 reviews. The story follows a guy named Marty Mauser who’s chasing a dream that nobody takes seriously, and it sounds like he goes through a lot to try and achieve it.
The film draws inspiration from the life of a champion table tennis player who dominated the sport in the 1940s and 50s. Timothée Chalamet stars as Marty, a talented player from that era, and the cast also includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Tyler the Creator, Fran Drescher, Sandra Bernhard, and Kevin O’Leary, known from the show Shark Tank.
Critics overwhelmingly loved Marty Supreme. Brian Tallerico praised it as a uniquely American story about a man struggling with his own expectations, while Matt Hambridge of FandomWire called it both wildly entertaining and surprisingly thoughtful, ultimately declaring it “something special.”
In a review, IGN Movies’ Michael Calabro praised the film, calling director Josh Safdie one of Hollywood’s most original and promising talents. He also declared Marty Supreme one of the year’s best movies.
So far, over 50 critics have reviewed the movie on Rotten Tomatoes, and only one gave it a negative rating. Stephanie Zacharek from Time Magazine criticized Timothée Chalamet’s performance, describing it as lifeless and lacking substance, comparing it to an empty sound echoing within the film.
Could Marty Supreme Finally Earn Chalamet an Oscar?
Timothée Chalamet, at just 29 years old, has already received two Academy Award nominations – for Call Me By Your Name in 2018 and another in 2025. Many are predicting he’ll win an Oscar for his role in Marty Supreme, with Caralynn Matassa jokingly writing, “It feels premature to say ‘Just give him the Oscar!’ about someone so young, but seriously—just give him the Oscar already.”
Matassa described Marty Supreme as humorous, provocative, and surprisingly moving, especially in its ending. She noted it shares a similar energy and visual style with the Safdie and Bronstein film Uncut Gems. Like Adam Sandler’s character in Uncut Gems, Timothée Chalamet’s Marty is racing against time to get money and avoid a crisis, though the stakes for Marty seem slightly lower to viewers.
Marty Supreme hits movie theaters on Dec. 25.
