The cast of Gilmore Girls recently talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the possibility of revisiting the show, sharing their affection for it and openness to returning. Scott Patterson, Lauren Graham, and Kelly Bishop all indicated they’d be willing to come back, though Graham believes a Gilmore Girls Christmas movie would be the best approach.

I’ve always thought a Christmas movie would be a great way to reconnect with familiar characters. It doesn’t need to be a whole series, just a chance to decorate the town and have a festive event. That’s been my idea, but ultimately, it’s not my decision.

Bishop mentioned she’s considered turning the show into a movie instead of continuing with more episodes. She also proposed a prequel storyline focusing on the characters Emily and Richard, as discussed on the ‘Drink Coffee, Talk Fast’ podcast.

She’s flexible about how a potential Gilmore Girls project could go, but there’s one non-negotiable: Amy Sherman-Palladino must be involved. She’ll only agree to a Gilmore Girls movie if Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, and Amy Sherman-Palladino all return, and she’ll only consider a spinoff series if the original creator is on board.

Scott Patterson hasn’t shared his opinion on whether a movie or another season would be better, but he believes Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life won’t be the last of the show. Given his strong ties to the network and his work hosting a Gilmore Girls podcast, he’s probably supportive of Lauren Graham’s idea for a winter movie.

Graham wasn’t the only one suggesting a Christmas-themed story. In the upcoming documentary Drink Coffee, Talk Fast, actress Sally Struthers, who played Babette, expressed a desire to see a Christmas episode, saying, “It would be lovely to revisit Stars Hollow during the holidays and see everyone.”

A Gilmore Girls Movie Would Be The Perfect Way To Bring Back The Show

While I’d enjoy seeing more Gilmore Girls, a movie feels like a more realistic and creatively satisfying option. The cast has become quite successful since the show originally aired, and it was fortunate that they were all available to film the four recent episodes.

Stars like Melissa McCarthy and Jared Padalecki were so busy they only had time for a single scene. Milo Ventimiglia had a bit more screen time, but it was still brief. Getting Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel’s schedules to match up is difficult due to their popularity, making a movie a more realistic option.

Beyond that, A Year in the Life didn’t quite work because it prioritized silly situations over developing its characters. The musical sequence in Stars Hollow felt overly long, and we didn’t need to see Rory spend so much time searching for her dress or delivering the town newspaper. These moments distracted from more important character-driven storylines.

Keeping each story around two hours long helps ensure it stays focused and doesn’t stray too far from the central plot. This allows us to maintain the charming atmosphere of Stars Hollow while still developing the main character’s journey. Events like the Bracebridge Dinner, Dance Marathon, and Stars Hollow Museum have already proven we can successfully blend these elements, creating both engaging stories and character growth.

The Gilmore Girls Movie Should Be Set In Fall, Not Winter

I’m really excited about the possibility of a Gilmore Girls movie, but I’m a little unsure about it being set at Christmas. Don’t get me wrong, the show’s Christmas episodes are fantastic – I honestly think “Forgiveness and Stuff” is the best episode ever! I’ll defend that, and April Nardini being awesome, to the end! But for me, winter just doesn’t feel like the most Gilmore-esque season. It feels a little off from what the show usually represents.

There’s a reason this show is known as the perfect cozy fall watch. It first aired on October 5th, 2000, and each season consistently premiered in the fall and wrapped up in May. The revival, A Year in the Life, also came out in the fall, and the autumn scenery in Stars Hollow is truly unforgettable.

Lauren Graham even made a playful comment during the Gilmore Girls segment at the 2025 Emmys, saying the show had “taken them hostage.” If they had to choose just one season to highlight, the best pick is clear.

Beyond that, a Christmas or winter movie would present a challenge for Gilmore Girls. There are already so many Christmas movies, and it’s hard to make one that doesn’t feel overly sentimental. While the show’s characters and the town of Stars Hollow are charmingly sweet and a little unrealistic, that could easily become a weakness in a dedicated holiday film.

As a long-time fan, I have to admit I’m cautiously optimistic about a potential Gilmore Girls Christmas movie. It’s a tricky balance, you know? Lean too hard into the holiday spirit and it risks feeling overly saccharine, which just doesn’t feel true to the show’s clever mix of humor and heart. But go too dark or dramatic, and you lose that cozy, magical feeling we all expect from a Christmas film. It really needs to strike just the right tone – it’s a very delicate line to walk.

The recent Gilmore Girls holiday commercials were charming, but very short – just around a minute long. Stretching that out to a full-length movie might lose some of its magic. And if they made a Christmas movie, it would likely focus on a romantic storyline for Rory instead of the heartwarming dynamic between Emily, Lorelai, and Rory.

Even though I enjoy a Gilmore Girls Christmas, a movie set in the fall would actually be a better fit for the show. It wouldn’t have as much complicated backstory, and it would feel truer to the spirit of Gilmore Girls.
