Dave Burd, the creator and star of the FX comedy series Dave, is adding a new project to his list: an animated movie. Burd is also a successful rapper known as Lil Dicky. He achieved chart success with his debut album, “Professional Rapper,” which reached No. 7 on the Billboard charts, and his 2024 album, “Penith (The Dave Soundtrack)”, served as the soundtrack for his popular TV show. The show Dave is loosely based on Burd’s own life and has featured guest appearances from big names like Rachel McAdams and Drake, with a particularly surprising rap performance by Brad Pitt in the Season 3 finale.
Ever since the latest season of Dave finished, people have been curious about what project Dave Burd, the show’s creator, would tackle next. Now, The Hollywood Reporter says Burd is in discussions with DreamWorks Animation to create an animated movie that he personally proposed. It appears DreamWorks won a competitive bidding process to get the project, and while details about the story are still secret, studios were clearly impressed with the idea.
People who know Dave and Lil Dicky’s previous work might expect this film to be similar to Sausage Party in terms of humor, but that might not be accurate. In 2023, Burd told The Hollywood Reporter that the actor hopes to create something truly exceptional, going beyond what his fans typically expect from him.
I don’t want to be stuck playing a silly role in a bad movie. I’m aiming for projects that are considered among the year’s best, or I want to create my own groundbreaking films. That’s why I named my company ‘Gr8 Films’ – I want it to be known for producing truly exceptional work.
Is There Another Season of ‘Dave’ on the Way?

It might seem surprising that the creator of ‘Dave’ is now working on a potential animated movie aimed at families. However, this artist has always been known for taking creative risks with both music and comedy, so this new project feels like a natural extension of that. Animated films take a long time to make, and this one is currently in the very early stages of development, meaning it could be several years before it’s released. While fans are eager for more ‘Dave’ in the meantime, there’s no confirmation if or when that will happen.
After the third season of the FX comedy Dave finished in 2023, its creator and star, Lil Dicky, decided to hold off on making another season right away. While a fourth season hasn’t been confirmed, it’s still a possibility for the future. He and FX might also work together on a different project, though nothing is planned currently. Lil Dicky has a lot on his plate with DreamWorks, so fans can expect to see more of his music and persona in other ways.
