She explained that the team focused on creating a series that feels fresh and modern, while still respecting the history and core elements fans love. The goal was to strike a balance between nostalgia and innovation.
Aya Komaki says they did not want Dragon Ball Daima to ‘feel dated’
Dragon Ball Daima’s director, Aya Komaki, recently discussed the show’s creative goals. She explained that the team intentionally aimed to create something new and exciting while still honoring the series’ history.
In an interview on the Japanese Blu-ray, Komaki discussed how the series’ visuals – especially the opening sequence looking back at Dragon Ball’s history – were created to honor the franchise’s past without feeling old-fashioned. He explained that they aimed for a nostalgic feel, something that would remind viewers of the original series, while still presenting a fresh take on Dragon Ball and the new character, Daima. Komaki emphasized that achieving this balance required a lot of careful attention to detail.
Komaki was joined by co-director Yoshitaka Yashima and executive producer Akio Iyoku, who further explained the importance of the opening recap. Iyoku stated that since the story follows events after the “Majin Buu” saga, the recap was designed to help new viewers catch up. He clarified, “The beginning of DAIMA actually has two goals. As Yashima-san mentioned, one is to show that it immediately follows the Buu saga.”
Komaki explained that another goal was to make the series accessible to all viewers. He wanted to establish the context and background – what he called ‘the state of things’ – so that even first-time viewers could easily understand what was happening from the beginning, rather than being confused by a sudden start.
