Fans are eagerly awaiting a follow-up to a beloved movie, which is now streaming on Peacock. Many science fiction books, like Dune, The Hunger Games, and The Handmaid’s Tale, have been successfully turned into large franchises. However, despite being ideal for expansion, Douglas Adams’ famous book, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, hasn’t yet become one.
The movie The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy came out in the US on April 29, 2005. It was directed by Garth Jennings and written with help from Karey Kirkpatrick and Douglas Adams, who originally created the series. The story began as a radio comedy in 1979 before becoming popular as books and comics. Today, you can watch it online, but despite its popularity, a second movie has never been made.
2005’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is the Only Movie Adaptation of Douglas Adams’ Book
In the 1970s, Douglas Adams turned down offers from a film producer and ABC to adapt The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, fearing it would become a comedic version of Star Wars. However, he later agreed to an option in 1982 and eventually sold the rights to Spyglass Entertainment (formerly Caravan Pictures) in 1997. An early script even influenced the movie Ghostbusters, but the project didn’t gain significant momentum until after Adams passed away in 2001.
The movie version of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy came out in the United States on April 29, 2005, and featured a remarkably talented cast. Stars like Martin Freeman, Yasiin Bey, Sam Rockwell, Zooey Deschanel, Bill Nighy, John Malkovich, Alan Rickman, and Helen Mirren all appeared in this adaptation of Douglas Adams’ beloved story. The film follows an Englishman who is saved from Earth just before it’s demolished to make way for a new hyperspace route.
Garth Jennings’ film adaptation of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy brilliantly brings Douglas Adams’ funny and satirical writing to life on screen, successfully capturing the original radio show’s quirky and over-the-top humor. While a TV series in 1981 and various other formats like audiobooks and comics introduced the story to a wider audience, Jennings’ movie remains the only big-screen version, and it still stands out as one of the most
Why a Hitchhiker’s Guide Sequel Hasn’t Been Developed in 21 Years
Although The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy earned $104.5 million worldwide with a production budget of $45-50 million, the studio wasn’t satisfied with its performance. This meant a sequel wasn’t planned, as the film didn’t make enough money to justify one. While it gained a devoted fan base, the movie received generally mixed reviews from both critics and audiences.
Honestly, I was a little bummed that The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy movie didn’t explode at the box office. It definitely made studios hesitant to take risks on sequels, especially ones nobody was really demanding. I figured if it hadn’t done well, getting the amazing cast – Freeman, Rickman, Mirren – back for another film would have been a huge struggle. Plus, the timing would’ve been tough; the positive feelings around Douglas Adams’ death would probably have lessened by the time a sequel was ready. And let’s be real, the movie did wrap things up pretty nicely, so it didn’t exactly leave audiences begging for more.
Despite not being a huge box office success, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy remains a beloved and important film in British cinema. Over the past 21 years, it’s built a dedicated fanbase, and its recent availability on Peacock may be introducing the story to a new generation. This renewed interest could finally lead to a sequel being made, potentially launching a whole new science fiction series.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Book Series Is the Perfect Source Material for a Movie Franchise
It’s surprising there haven’t been more movies or TV shows based on The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, especially considering there’s a lot of source material. While often called a trilogy, Douglas Adams actually wrote six novels in the series – five himself, and one more in 2009 by Eoin Colfer, who also wrote the Artemis Fowl books. This gives filmmakers plenty of stories to choose from.
After The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (1979), the series continued with The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (1980), Life, the Universe and Everything (1982), So Long, And Thanks for All the Fish (1984), Mostly Harmless (1992), and And Another Thing… (2009), all following the adventures of Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, and Trillian. The entire Hitchhiker’s Guide series is known for being imaginative, chaotic, and humorous, and it has the potential to be a truly great adaptation – it just needs the right person to bring it to life.
