Stephen King Has Seen IT: Welcome To Derry, And He’s GIving It A Full-Throated Endorsement

Although October isn’t overflowing with new horror releases like you might expect, I’m most excited about one show premiering in 2025: HBO’s IT: Welcome to Derry. This series, inspired by Stephen King’s work, isn’t a direct adaptation of a specific book, but instead uses the setting of King’s famously haunted town, Derry, to tell a new story with fresh characters and creatures. Importantly, it’s already received a strong endorsement, suggesting it will be a hit.

Stephen King was among the first to see the new series, potentially even before me, and he’s already sharing his positive thoughts online. Here’s what he posted on Threads:

WELCOME TO DERRY is amazing. First episode is terrifying.

Stephen King playfully referenced the show with a fun, if slightly misremembered, phrase – ‘Badda bing, badda bang, badda Beam guardian Maturin.’ Perhaps he intentionally avoided saying the name ‘IT’ to avoid inadvertently giving the creature any power.

I really appreciate that Stephen King calls the show “amazing” overall, instead of just focusing on how scary it is. While I also liked that he described the first episode as “terrifying,” I’m especially excited by the idea of being genuinely amazed by a horror series – it doesn’t happen often enough! If King thinks *IT: Welcome to Derry* delivers that feeling, that’s enough to get me hyped. It’s got me in the Halloween spirit!

The upcoming return to Derry and the Neibolt house is the final Stephen King adaptation planned for 2025, a year that’s already been very successful for King’s work. The project will finally bring back Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise, along with his human character, Bob Gray. A glimpse of Gray, and another frightening creature, was previously shown on Funko merchandise.

The story focuses on Leroy and Charlotte Hanlon, who move to Derry in 1962, a time already marked by the disappearance of a young boy. This is only the beginning of a series of terrifying events that plague the town, and the Hanlons soon discover just how deeply rooted the darkness and evil are in Derry as more children vanish.

The new series, connected to the world of *IT*, stars Chris Chalk, who previously appeared in *Gotham*, as Dick Hallorann long before the events of *The Shining*. The trailer also included a quick shot of a prison that looks like the one from *Shawshank Redemption*. Fans of *IT* will recognize the familiar imagery of floating people and the massive Paul Bunyan statue. I’m particularly excited to see that statue scene! I’m also curious about how the brief shot of what looked like an asteroid will be used to explain the source of evil in the town.

Even though Stephen King is a writer, don’t automatically believe everything he says about his own work. Check out *IT: Welcome to Derry* on HBO and HBO Max starting Sunday, October 26th, to experience the story for yourself! It’s the perfect way to get in the Halloween spirit, Georgie.
