FX’s English Teacher Is Peak Millennial Representation, And I Feel So Seen

FX currently has several excellent shows available, and you can watch them with a Hulu subscription. We’re now enjoying Season 2 of English Teacher, which takes us back to Morrison-Hensley High School, and it’s perfect for binge-watching. I’ve been watching the new episodes quickly, and I have to say, it really resonates with me as a millennial. Let me elaborate.

I was so excited and ready to watch Season 2 of English Teacher when it premiered on September 25th! I’ve been loving this show, especially the scenes where Evan is teaching his students. It’s fascinating to see how their perspectives and cultural understanding of the world are so different. Season 2 really delivered on that again, and honestly, it made me feel so seen – for so many reasons! It really resonated with me, and I’m already looking forward to more. It’s just a fantastic show.

Evan’s Trouble Connecting With His Gen Z Students Is Relatable AF

Although Millennials and Gen Z are close in age, there can be a significant disconnect between them. English Teacher often humorously highlights this, particularly when his students collectively correct him. The Season 2 premiere, “COVID in America,” perfectly illustrated this, showing how his views on the lockdown years differ from the younger generation, who had crucial developmental years spent learning remotely.

Beyond the fact that Evan’s students don’t realize how young he is-including that his mother is still living and healthy-the show’s classroom scenes are made better by the subtle miscommunications between them and their (as you might expect) English teacher. Because of this, the thoughts I often have while watching frequently come out through Alvarez, who plays the sitcom’s main character.

Watching the discussion about Tony Kushner’s Angels in America at the start of Season 2 really resonated with me, because it’s my all-time favorite play. I often experience a similar disconnect when I share my favorite films or TV shows with younger friends. A lot of these came out in the ’90s, before they were even born! While Angels is considered a theatrical masterpiece, that doesn’t really matter to high school students who grew up watching Euphoria (available with an HBO Max subscription). Actually, I recently mentioned to a group of people in their twenties that I still have cable, and they gave me a look like I was an actual grandfather.

The soundtrack in English Teacher features a lot of great ’80s and ’90s songs that really fit the show’s story. I always enjoy hearing songs like The Bangles’ “Manic Monday” or When In Rome’s “The Promise” on the FX series – they remind me of my childhood! Especially songs that younger listeners, like Gen Z, might not be familiar with.

Beyond all the relatable millennial details in English Teacher, I also connected with how Evan’s experiences as a gay man in a relationship have been shown. His relationship with Malcolm (played brilliantly by Jordan Firstman, who I’ve quietly admired since his short film The Disgustings in 2024) is realistically complex and difficult. This includes the specific hurdles of navigating an open relationship, which is increasingly common among gay men today. And having Jimmy Fowlie’s character, Daniel, crash on Evan’s couch in Season 2 is a perfect moment for fans of the comedian.

New episodes of English Teacher are shown on Thursdays on FX. You can currently watch the entire second season on Hulu as part of the 2025 television lineup. Whether the show will become one of the greatest sitcoms of all time is still uncertain, but I’m really enjoying it and hope it gets renewed for a third season quickly.
