At Netflix’s Tudum event, details about the upcoming thriller The Whisper Man were unveiled, including its release date of August 28, 2026. The series, adapted from Alex North’s novel, stars Robert De Niro, Michelle Monaghan, and Adam Scott. The story follows a grieving crime writer whose son is kidnapped. He reluctantly turns to his father, a retired detective, for help, and they uncover a link to a cold case involving a notorious serial killer nicknamed ‘The Whisper Man’.

Tudum also shared a glimpse of the new movie’s story for anyone who hasn’t heard of it. The film centers around a detective reopening a case involving a serial killer believed to be behind a new string of disappearances. Years prior, the detective originally arrested the killer, known as ‘The Whisper Man,’ and now a chilling nursery rhyme connected to the case is resurfacing.
James Ashcroft, the director of films like The Rule of Jenny Pen and Coming Home in the Dark, helms the new Netflix movie. The screenplay is by Ben Jacoby, who wrote The First Omen, and Chase Palmer, known for It. This film is the sixth collaboration between Netflix and the independent production company ABGO, run by Anthony and Joe Russo. ABGO is also behind popular films such as Everything Everywhere All at Once and Secret Wars.
Alongside Robert De Niro, Louise Monaghan, and Jack Scott, The Whisper Man features a talented ensemble cast. Hamish Linklater (known for Midnight Mass), Owen Teague (It, You Hurt My Feelings), Acston Luca Porto (appearing in the upcoming Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado), and Will Brill (The Eyes of My Mother, Not Fade Away) also star in the film.
AGBO is thrilled to be making its sixth movie with Netflix, as announced on Tudum. According to AGBO’s Angela Russo-Otstot, The Whisper Man is a suspenseful thriller that’s also a moving story about fathers and sons. They’re especially pleased to have acting legend Robert De Niro leading the cast, and are excited about the work of director James Ashcroft.
The Whisper Man Follows Up On De Niro’s Previous Netflix Titles
This August, Robert De Niro will release The Whisper Man, his third significant project with the streaming service. He previously starred in the 2025 series, marking his first leading role in a television show. In that series, he played a former U.S. President granted extraordinary authority by the current president to investigate a major cyberattack.
Robert De Niro appeared in the 2019 gangster film The Irishman. He played Frank Sheeran, a based-on-a-true-story character who worked as a hitman for the influential Jimmy Hoffa (played by Al Pacino). The film received multiple Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Picture.
Expect to learn more about the Netflix film The Whisper Man in the coming months before it premieres on August 28th.
