Stephen King’s HBO crime thriller is back haunting the streaming charts.
Stephen King’s stories have been adapted into many films, including classics like Brian De Palma’s Carrie (1976), Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980), and Rob Reiner’s Misery (1990). More recently, his work has found success on television with streaming series such as HBO’s The Outsider (2020), Apple TV+’s Lisey’s Story (2021), The Stand (2020–2021) on Paramount+, and The Institute (2025–) on MGM+, with one series currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity.
Originally airing six years ago, The Outsider is now a popular streaming series around the world. This HBO miniseries, based on Stephen King’s 2018 novel, centers on a detective and an unusual investigator who find their investigation into a horrific child murder complicated by a mysterious and unsettling supernatural force.
As of today, April 28th, the series The Outsider is back in the top 10 most-watched shows on HBO Max, currently at number 9. It’s following Euphoria at number 1, as well as Rooster, The Pitt, The Idol, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, From, Memory of a Killer, and Chernobyl. It’s ahead of La Promesa, which is in 10th place.
Currently, the show The Outsider is a top 10 hit on HBO Max in 17 countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. These countries include Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, El Salvador, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
The cast of The Outsider features Ben Mendelsohn, Bill Camp, Jeremy Bobb, Julianne Nicholson, Mare Winningham, Paddy Considine, Yul Vazquez, Marc Menchaca, Cynthia Erivo, and Jason Bateman. Bateman not only starred in the series but also directed the first two episodes and received an Emmy nomination for his guest performance.
Critics loved The Outsider, giving it a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. They praised the show’s captivating story and strong acting, especially Cynthia Erivo’s performance. While some found the pacing a bit slow, the overall response was very positive, and audiences gave it an 82% score.
Despite HBO canceling it after one season, the company that made the show, MRC, is looking for another network or streaming service to continue it. Stephen King, the author of the original story, has said scripts for a second season were already finished, and the actors and crew were eager to come back, but so far, a second season of The Standout hasn’t materialized.
