The upcoming series, Blade Runner: 2099, will continue the story of the Blade Runner films. Interestingly, Prime Video’s previous cyberpunk series already feels like a backstory to the franchise. Though now considered a science fiction classic, the original Blade Runner film from 1982 wasn’t initially well-received by critics or audiences. Many found the adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, confusing, and that reflected in its poor performance at the box office.
Over time, the original Blade Runner’s standing has improved, and Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049, was generally well-received by critics. However, 2049 didn’t make much money in theaters, which likely influenced the decision to release the next installment, Blade Runner: 2099, as a streaming series. Being a series removes the pressure of box office success and allows the creators more time to develop the rich world of Blade Runner.
Prime Video has shown it can succeed with this type of show before. The 2022 sci-fi series The Peripheral already feels like it could fit perfectly into the Blade Runner universe. Starring Chloë Grace Moretz, the show centers on a gamer who discovers a hidden, alternate world. Told across two different time periods, it’s a dystopian story that explores both a bleak, distant future and a near-future where artificial intelligence creates a sense of uncertainty.
The Peripheral Feels Like A Blade Runner Prequel Series
Based on William Gibson’s novel The Peripheral, the eight-episode show featured a cast including Jack Reynor, Katie Leung, T’Nia Miller, Adeline Horan, and Charlotte Riley. The story followed Fisher as she navigated a puzzling alternate reality in 2032 while also catching glimpses of a troubling future in 2099, and trying to understand how the two timelines were linked. Fans of Blade Runner might find the story familiar, as The Peripheral shares many similarities with that franchise.
William Gibson was surprised by the similarities between the film Blade Runner and his unreleased novel Neuromancer when he first watched it, and he’s considered a key figure in developing the cyberpunk genre, along with Philip K. Dick. Therefore, it’s not surprising that his new show, The Peripheral, feels like it could fit within the Blade Runner universe, even though it focuses more on traveling between different worlds than on the relationship between humans and robots.
Prime Video’s Cancellation Of The Peripheral Turned It Into A Hidden Gem
The main difference between The Peripheral and Prime Video’s Blade Runner: 2099 is that Blade Runner: 2099 immediately benefits from being a well-known franchise. Although the original Blade Runner films weren’t always financial successes, the new series—following Michelle Yeoh’s character Olwen as she nears the end of her life—gains recognition and interest thanks to its connection to established names like Villeneuve, Scott, Harrison Ford, and Ryan Gosling.
Unlike some well-known shows, The Peripheral didn’t have a strong existing fanbase, so it wasn’t a shock when it was canceled after one season. However, this cancellation actually helped it gain a dedicated following, similar to how the end of the Tron animated series turned it into a favorite among sci-fi fans. Now, The Peripheral is a great choice for those who enjoy the Blade Runner universe and are eagerly awaiting the release of Blade Runner: 2099, offering them another dose of cyberpunk storytelling.
