Mike Flanagan achieved great success with his series on Netflix, and his earlier show, Midnight Mass, unexpectedly gained a dedicated following. Now, five years later, Apple TV+ is aiming to replicate that success with a new project.
Like Midnight Mass, Widow’s Bay is set in a secluded, charming island community in New England, hinting at a hidden mystery. The series will be released on April 29th, so viewers won’t have to wait long to discover what that mystery is.
What Is Widow’s Bay About?
The new film, Widow’s Bay, mixes real scares with funny, relatable characters. It centers on Mayor Tom Loftis, who is trying hard to save his town from decline.
This tiny island has no Wi-Fi and unreliable cell service, and Tom is facing challenges with the locals, who believe their home is cursed. He’s trying to earn their respect, but they see him as weak and afraid—and unfortunately, they’re right.
Loftis is committed to creating a brighter future for his son and transforming the island into a popular tourist spot, and surprisingly, he achieves this – visitors finally begin to arrive. However, the islanders’ warnings prove correct. After years of peace, the unbelievable tales of the past start coming true.
Katie Dippold, a writer for the NBC show Parks and Recreation, created Widow’s Bay. Bobby Moynihan stars as Mayor Tom Lofties and also serves as an executive producer with Hiro Murai.
The series begins with two episodes: the premiere, titled “Welcome to Widow’s Bay!”, and the second episode, “Lodging.” The show starts with a mysterious note: “We hope your ferry ride to New England’s hidden gem was pleasant! Don’t worry about the fog—everything is normal.”
In Episode 2, Mayor Loftis will spend a night at the local inn to demonstrate its safety and preserve its historical appeal.
The new show Widow’s Bay is getting rave reviews! It launched with a perfect 100% score on review sites, earning the “Certified Fresh” designation. Critics agree that the show is a successful and quirky horror-comedy, skillfully using familiar genre elements to deliver both scares and laughs, all supported by a talented cast.
Widow’s Bay Sounds Perfect for Midnight Mass Fans
Mike Flanagan is currently one of the most talented horror directors working today. He’s known for successful adaptations, including the 2019 film Doctor Sleep and the upcoming The Life of Chuck in 2025, as well as popular Netflix series like The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and The Fall of the House of Usher.
He created, wrote, and directed the show. Its story shares similarities with Widow’s Bay, centering around a deeply religious and poor island community where strange things begin happening after a new priest arrives.
The limited series, which has seven episodes, brought together familiar faces from the ‘Flanaverse’ including Rahul Kohli, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, Zach Gilford, and Henry Thomas. Hamish Linklater and Kristin Lehman also star. Critics generally loved it, giving it an 87% approval rating, and audiences also enjoyed it, with a 79% rating.
You can watch Midnight Mass on Netflix. Widow’s Bay will debut with two episodes on April 29th, and then new episodes will be released every Wednesday until the season ends on June 17th.
