DC Studios and HBO have pulled the trailer for one of the most anticipated series of 2026.
The upcoming series, Lanterns, will star Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. The supporting cast includes Kelly MacDonald, Garret Dillahunt, Jason Ritter, Nicole Ari Parker, Ulrich Thomsen, and Nathan Fillion. Created by Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy, and Tom King, the show is aiming for a realistic take on the DC universe, similar in style to True Detective and Slow Horses, and differs from the more fantastical approach of the upcoming Superman film.
Recently, DC pulled the trailer for Lanterns from most of its official channels. This sparked a lot of discussion online, especially since the trailer was criticized for its overall look and feel. After the trailer’s release and comments from writer Lindelof about changing the classic “green” look of Green Lantern, well-known comic book author Grant Morrison shared their opinion.
‘Green Lanterns’ is a far more compelling and impactful title than simply ‘Lanterns’—much like how ‘Raise the Red Lantern’ is a stronger movie title than ‘Raise the Lantern’. If someone doesn’t understand that, they shouldn’t be working on superhero projects. The show itself could be decent, but it could be so much better if studios prioritized hiring talented people instead of relying on less-skilled friends to simplify the stories. Hollywood’s tendency to stay within a small circle will ultimately be its downfall.
Lindelof eventually apologized and emphasized his deep affection for the characters Hal, John, and the entire Green Lantern Corps. However, the apology didn’t stop a strong negative reaction, with even the director of Man of Steel, Zack Snyder, publicly commenting. Many believe this controversy over the trailer’s color grading may have led to its removal.
A new teaser poster for the DCU series has been released. It shows Hal and John inside a Green Lantern ring with the tagline, “only one can wear the ring.” The trailer suggested Hal is training John as a potential successor, so the tagline could mean either that, or that one of them might not survive.
Now that Pierre is returning as John in Man of Tomorrow, it strongly suggests the show will end with him becoming the Green Lantern. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean anything bad will happen to Hal Jordan – he might just be choosing to retire. Either way, this series, with its unique feel, will likely have a significant impact on the future of the DC Universe.
Even though the trailer has been taken down, the series is still scheduled to come out in August 2026, though the exact date hasn’t been announced. The newest poster continues to show this original release timeframe for Lanterns.
