As a huge fan, I was so excited after seeing how well the crossover with Lower Decks and that amazing musical episode landed in Season 2 of Strange New Worlds! It really seemed like the show was willing to try anything. Season 3 definitely leaned into that, experimenting with all sorts of different genres, which the actors seemed to really enjoy. Honestly, though, the fans were a little divided on whether all the experimentation really worked.

The trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 doesn’t try anything overly ambitious. Instead, it focuses on classic Star Trek elements. While we see intriguing shots of dinosaurs and Captain Pike riding a horse—a fun, well-known part of his personality—the trailer also avoids recent trends like using popular music, opting for a more traditional score.

Filming for season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds finished before the negative reaction to season 3 and the backlash against the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy spin-off. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Is Hiding Season 4’s Big Swings

At San Diego Comic-Con, they announced a unique puppet-themed episode and also premiered the fourth episode of season 3, a much-discussed murder mystery directed by Jonathan Frakes and filmed to resemble a classic Hollywood production.

Fans didn’t react to either show as Paramount+ hoped. Jonathan Frakes’ “A Space Adventure Hour” surprisingly didn’t perform as well as his Star Trek: Lower Decks crossover event. And the announcement of a puppet-focused episode of Strange New Worlds was largely met with doubt. Because of the current feelings within the Star Trek fanbase, the marketing for Strange New Worlds’ fourth season is downplaying its more experimental choices—including the puppets—and is instead focusing on familiar and comforting themes.
