The recent season of the CBS legal drama starring Kathy Bates has quickly become popular on streaming services, and viewers are eagerly anticipating the next installment.
According to data from FlixPatrol, the new Matlock series starring Kathy Bates has been a top ten streaming show on Paramount+ in the US for three weeks straight. Currently, it’s ranked number three, following South Park at number one and NCIS at number two.
CBS’ Matlock Reboot Starring Kathy Bates — Explained
The 2024 CBS series Matlock, created by Jennie Snyder Urman and inspired by the original 1986 show, is a fresh take on the classic legal drama. The story centers around Madeline Kingston, who infiltrates the Jacobson Moore law firm – the firm she believes wronged her daughter – to seek justice from the inside.
Joining Bates in Matlock are Skye P. Marshall as Olympia Lawrence, Jason Ritter as Julian Markston, and David Del Rio and Leah Lewis as Billy Martinez and Sarah Franklin. Sam Anderson and Aaron Harris complete the main cast, playing Madeline’s husband and grandson, Alfie and Edwin.
As a big fan of the original, I was thrilled when the Matlock reboot premiered, and it really resonated with both viewers and critics! The first season was a huge hit, scoring a fantastic 90% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Season two was still well-received by critics, but honestly, a lot of fans – myself included – felt the show took some turns that didn’t quite land. That brought the overall audience score down to around 67% on Rotten Tomatoes’ “Popcornmeter” as of today.
The show also received significant recognition, winning four major industry awards during its first two seasons. These awards all honored Kathy Bates for her performance, with wins in the Best Actress and Outstanding Lead Performance categories at the AARP Movies for Grownup Awards, the Critics’ Choice Television Awards, the Gotham TV Awards, and the Satellite Awards.
What the Future Looks Like for Kathy Bates’ Matlock
The season ended with a surprising twist: Bates’ lawyer finally got justice for her daughter. This means season three of Matlock will be very different from the first two, as the main story arc has concluded and the show will now focus on new cases and characters.
Despite the delay, fans are still excited for the next season of Matlock. However, production on both Matlock Season 3 and another show has been put on hold, meaning neither will likely be released until at least Spring 2027.
Matlock is currently available for streaming on Paramount+
