Since the popular show The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019, its actors have all been working on new projects, but one star’s recent show on AMC is particularly noteworthy. The Big Bang Theory was once a huge hit, even competing with Game of Thrones for the title of TV’s most-watched show. It’s hard to imagine now, but at its height, the CBS sitcom about a group of friends attracted a massive audience of 20 million viewers.
While The Big Bang Theory kept most of its audience until the very end in 2019, the actors have had varying levels of success since then. Jim Parsons starred in films like The Boys in the Band and Spoiler Alert, and he continued to voice Sheldon Cooper as the narrator of the prequel series Young Sheldon. Johnny Galecki appeared in the Roseanne spin-off The Conners, but hasn’t acted in anything since.
Kaley Cuoco has received consistent praise for her TV work, including shows like The Flight Attendant, Vanished, Based on a True Story, and Harley Quinn. However, her films Meet Cute and Role Play weren’t as well-received by critics. Currently, the best project from anyone in the show’s main cast is AMC’s The Audacity, starring Simon Helberg. This dark comedy, about a tech CEO’s dramatic fall from grace, is quickly becoming a critical hit.
The Audacity Couldn’t Be More Different From TBBT, But Simon Helberg’s Characters Are Surprisingly Similar
In the series The Audacity, Billy Magnussen (known from No Time To Die) plays Duncan Park, a tech CEO who calls himself the “Inventor of the Future.” When a major scandal breaks regarding his mishandling of user data, Park attempts to blackmail his therapist, JoAnne Felder, played by Sarah Goldberg, to help him hide the truth. Meanwhile, Helberg portrays Martin Phister, the husband of Anushka, played by Meaghna Rath, who works as Park’s ethics advisor. However, because Anushka used to have an affair with Park, her advice isn’t exactly unbiased.
Park is the main villain driving the drama in The Audacity, but the show reveals the flaws in everyone. As a sharp satire of Silicon Valley, The Audacity is just as critical of Martin as it is of all its characters, offering a similar, unflinching look at the tech world that shows like The Studio and Hacks previously gave to the entertainment industry. The show’s excellent reviews demonstrate that critics are responding well to its honest portrayal.
With shows like The Social Network, Super Pumped, The Dropout, WeCrashed, Dumb Money, and the upcoming Swiped, audiences might think they’ve seen every possible story about tech CEOs succeeding and failing. But because The Audacity isn’t based on a real person from Silicon Valley, it can explore the issues with the tech industry in a fresh way, without simply retelling someone’s life story.

The show feels more akin to dramas like Succession or Industry, complete with their signature dark humor and intense conflicts. At its core is a fantastic performance by Simon Helberg as Martin, proving he can take the lovable, nerdy archetype from The Big Bang Theory and reinvent it in surprising and hilarious ways. Though it’s much more cynical than The Big Bang Theory, The Audacity is arguably the best work from any of the show’s main actors since that series concluded.
