Sitcoms are unique because they often reflect real-life situations, unlike many other TV shows that focus on fantasy or escapism. While people often watch TV to get away from their daily routines, sitcoms manage to be entertaining by drawing inspiration from the everyday. Though the basic formula – a consistent group of characters, a recognizable setting, and a problem solved in about half an hour – seems straightforward, it’s surprisingly difficult to create a truly successful sitcom.
Many sitcoms, like 2 Broke Girls and How I Met Your Mother, have been popular, but they aren’t without flaws. A truly great sitcom needs to be consistently funny, well-made, and feature jokes that remain hilarious even years later. These five American sitcoms came the closest to achieving that ideal.
The Golden Girls Is Truly Timeless
Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia were a group of older friends living together in Miami, and the show followed their adventures with dating, friendship, and the challenges of getting older. What made The Golden Girls so special was that it put women in their fifties and sixties – an age often overlooked – right at the heart of the story. Considering the show premiered in 1985, it was truly groundbreaking.
As a critic, I’ve always admired how each of The Golden Girls truly owned their comedic style. Dorothy delivered those brilliantly cutting remarks, Rose was wonderfully naive, Blanche was hilariously self-absorbed, and Sophia… well, she used her age as the ultimate comedic weapon! But beyond the laughs, what really struck me was how the show wasn’t afraid to get real, tackling tough issues like AIDS, loss, sexuality, and even financial struggles. And honestly, it holds up beautifully today – it’s funny, heartwarming, and surprisingly relevant.
Schitt’s Creek Is One of the Most Wholesome Comedies
Most sitcoms rely on unchanging characters and repeating jokes, but Schitt’s Creek stands out by showing real growth in its characters over its six seasons. The show follows the Rose family – Johnny, Moira, David, and Alexis – who go from being incredibly rich to starting over in a small town after losing their fortune. It’s a funny ‘fish-out-of-water’ story made even better by the talented actors.
Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara perfectly play Johnny and Moira Rose, and while their characters’ snobbish attitudes are initially a source of humor, they gradually become more down-to-earth as they adjust to life in Schitt’s Creek. Beyond its distinctive comedy, the show also offered some surprisingly powerful and moving moments, especially in David’s romantic storyline.
Seinfeld May Be About Nothing, But It Achieved Perfection
Seinfeld centers around Jerry Seinfeld and his friends – George, Elaine, and Kramer – and their humorous experiences with the little things in life in New York City. Often called “a show about nothing,” it surprisingly finds big laughs, relatable situations, and even thoughtful moments in everyday occurrences. The show largely relies on observing people and finding the comedy in how we all behave.
The show’s structure worked brilliantly, allowing multiple storylines to develop simultaneously and converge seamlessly in the finale. Unlike shows like Schitt’s Creek, which excel at heartwarming moments, Seinfeld deliberately went against the grain, proving a sitcom could be hilarious even with unlikable characters. It didn’t try to teach any lessons; it simply existed in the present, offering a dry and witty perspective.
The Good Place Is the Perfect Blend of Existentialism and Humor
What happens after we die is a question humans have wrestled with for ages, but the show The Good Place tackled it in a completely unique way. The story starts with Eleanor Shellstrop, an ordinary and somewhat unpleasant woman, after she dies. She unexpectedly finds herself in the Good Place, a paradise reserved for people who lived exceptionally virtuous lives. There, she connects with Chidi, who is meant to be her soulmate, as well as Jason, Tahani, Janet (an artificial intelligence designed to help those in the afterlife), and Michael, the creator of the Good Place.
As a huge comedy fan, I’ve been thinking about The Good Place lately. It’s created by Michael Schur, and what I love is how it gently asks big questions about what it even means to be a good person these days, and if the way we categorize people is still relevant. It’s surprisingly thought-provoking for a sitcom! The writing is incredibly smart and funny, and it manages to explore these deeper ideas without ever feeling preachy. Plus, honestly, the show has one of the best twists I’ve ever seen in a comedy – it really sets it apart.
The Office Is Inimitable, and That Makes It Untouchable
The American version of The Office isn’t known for having a perfect structure, and it definitely pushes boundaries with its humor. But that’s also what makes it so special. The show boasts a fantastic group of characters – including office employees like Dwight, Jim, Pam, Kevin, Angela, and Oscar – all led by their hilariously inappropriate boss, Michael Scott.
The Office was a masterclass in cringe comedy, finding humor in deeply awkward characters and situations. While the show had a lot of heart and genuine affection between its characters, it truly shined when they were at their most embarrassing and inconsiderate. The unique and quirky personalities of each character perfectly suited the show’s hilarious and unconventional environment.
