Driver’s Ed just took a wild turn.
Bobby Farrelly, best known for directing and creating iconic 90s and early 2000s comedies like There’s Something About Mary and Dumb and Dumber (often with his brother Peter), is celebrated for his slapstick and often outrageous humor. After years of collaborating, he directed Champions on his own in 2023.
The trailer for “Driver’s Ed,” the new comedy from the Farrelly brothers, is out now. The film premiered to great reviews at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival and will be released on May 15th. It stars Sam Nivola as Jeremy, a high school senior and aspiring filmmaker who wins a prize for his short film. The story kicks into high gear when Jeremy steals the driver’s ed car—with his classmates on board—to try and find his girlfriend before she heads off to college. Kumail Nanjiani plays the driving instructor.
Things quickly fall apart when Principal Fisher (Molly Shannon) discovers the teen sexting during class. After a serious warning and a stolen car, she calls in school security to pursue the runaway students. Officers Walsh and Lee, both hoping to impress, are particularly determined to catch them, as Walsh wants to return to the state police. The trailer for Driver’s Ed hints at the trouble and consequences Jeremy will face as he embarks on this risky journey to find his girlfriend, though his friends are there to support him.
The new comedy Driver’s Ed is drawing comparisons to the 2004 film EuroTrip, which became popular with audiences despite mixed reviews. EuroTrip only earned a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but Driver’s Ed is already getting much better reviews, with an 80% rating. Critics are describing it as heartwarming, reminiscent of 1980s comedies, and simply a fun movie to watch.
The new comedy from the Farrelly brothers stars Nivola, Kumail Nanjiani, Sophie Telegadis, Mohana Krishnan, Aidan Laprete, Shannon, Lilah Pate, Tim Baltz, Alyssa Milano, and Clayton Farris. Nivola is well-known for his work in shows like The White Lotus and films including Maestro, Eileen, and The Perfect Couple. He also has two more projects on the way: Phony and Days Ending in Y.
Kumail Nanjiani is also part of the cast. He’s known for his work in projects like The Big Sick, Eternals, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Fallout, and Ella McCay. He has several projects coming up, including Deli Boys, The Breadwinner, The Wrong Girls, Sex Criminals, and All Day and All Night.
