The idea was to bring back Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jim Hawkins and Brian Murray as Long John Silver for another adventure. Apparently, Jim and Silver were going to team up and face off against a villain named Ironbeard, with Willem Dafoe providing the voice! Sadly, after the original Treasure Planet didn’t perform well at the box office, Disney shelved the whole project. It’s a shame, because it sounded like a fantastic follow-up.

After the release of Treasure Planet, plans were made for a spin-off TV show that would continue the story and expand on the movie’s futuristic world. It might even have included concepts from a sequel that was never made. Sadly, like the sequel, the TV series was ultimately cancelled and never produced.

Even after over twenty years, many Disney fans still hope to see more of Treasure Planet. While a traditional sequel doesn’t seem likely, the movie could follow the current Disney trend of being reimagined as a live-action film. Although some movie lovers dislike the wave of live-action remakes, Treasure Planet could be a special case. The original film had a lot of promise but didn’t quite connect with audiences. A live-action version could give it a fresh start, attract a larger fanbase, and potentially launch a full franchise. However, Disney hasn’t announced any plans for a remake.

Over two decades after its initial disappointing release, Treasure Planet is finally gaining the recognition it deserves. Many who watched it as children remember the film fondly, appreciating its unique blend of science fiction, cyberpunk aesthetics, and a captivating story. While it may not be considered a perfect film, Treasure Planet has become a beloved cult classic and perhaps deserves more praise after overcoming a rough start.
