Even twenty years after it first came out in June 2005, remains the most successful movie version of H.G. Wells’ classic science-fiction novel, The War of the Worlds, which was originally published over a century ago in 1898. Though the story has been adapted for the screen many times – including a poorly received 2025 version with Ice Cube – this one truly captures the spirit of Wells’ original work.
Steven Spielberg directed this 2005 film, with the screenplay written by Josh Friedman (known for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) and David Koepp (Jurassic Park). Starring Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, and Justin Chatwin, the movie is a thrilling adaptation of H.G. Wells’ story, capturing the novel’s core ideas. Even after 21 years, it remains a standout science fiction film.
2005’s War of the Worlds Captures the Essence of H. G. Wells’ Original Story
Steven Spielberg’s 2005 film, War of the Worlds, was a big hit in theaters, becoming the first blockbuster adaptation of H.G. Wells’ classic story. While it was the fourth movie based on the novel, it stood out as a major success, earning $603.9 million worldwide and a 76% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Spielberg was already known for his talent with alien stories, having previously directed popular films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
The film was successful because it truly captured the spirit of H.G. Wells’ original story, something previous adaptations hadn’t achieved. It follows Tom Cruise as he attempts to safeguard his children, Rachel (Dakota Fanning) and Robbie (Justin Chatwin), when Earth is attacked by enormous, alien ‘tripod’ machines. Unlike Wells’ book, which is told through the eyes of an observer, this War of the Worlds focuses on a father’s struggle to protect his family during the invasion.
Even though this version of War of the Worlds is told from a new angle, it still successfully creates the same eerie and unsettling mood as the original book. The film effectively builds tension and focuses on how real people might react to an alien invasion. Critics particularly liked the updated setting, the accurate design of the alien machines, and the believable acting. It remains the most impactful and successful adaptation of the story to date.
War of the Worlds’ More Recent Adaptations Have Been Disappointing
For over seventy years, the story has been retold in many forms – from movies and TV shows to radio plays, stage productions, comics, video games, and even music. The very first movie version, directed by Byron Haskin, came out in 1953 and cleverly updated the original setting from Victorian England to Southern California in the present day. Many consider this first adaptation a classic, and the 2005 film War of the Worlds achieved similar popularity.
After the initial film, many lower-budget and independent versions of The War of the Worlds appeared. However, more recent adaptations often lacked the charm of both H.G. Wells’ original novel and the 2005 movie. A British miniseries from 2019 moved the story to Edwardian England but ended up being long and dull. That same year, a British-French TV series ran for three seasons, completely updating the story to modern Europe, but strayed significantly from the source material.
Rich Lee’s film, The Icing on the Cake, features Ice Cube as Homeland Security officer Will Radford, who battles an alien invasion from his computer. However, the 2025 version of War of the Worlds received a very poor 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – some might even say that’s being kind. This makes Steven Spielberg’s 2005 adaptation look even better by comparison.
War of the Worlds’ Renewed Success Spells Good News for Steven Spielberg’s Next Alien Movie
The movie War of the Worlds is currently streaming on Paramount+ and will be available on Hulu soon, and it’s been very popular with viewers. This renewed interest in Steven Spielberg’s version of the classic story is a good sign for his upcoming science fiction film, Disclosure Day, which promises a fresh, original take on alien encounters. While War of the Worlds is a long-standing favorite, Disclosure Day will offer audiences a brand new extraterrestrial story.
The new sci-fi movie, Disclosure Day, is set to release on June 12, 2026, and is already generating a lot of excitement. Some believe it could be as successful as War of the Worlds and even redefine the sci-fi genre. Given the similarities between the two films, it’s a great time to revisit the excellent 2005 version of War of the Worlds.
