The Last Of Us Creator & Star’s New Mystery Movie Debuts To Stellar Rotten Tomatoes Score

Critics are already loving the new mystery film, The Sheep Detectives, from The Last of Us creator Craig Mazin and star Bella Ramsey. The film comes out in theaters in just a few days and is receiving very positive reviews.

The new animated film, The Sheep Detectives, is getting rave reviews, earning a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics describe it as a delightful and funny movie, often comparing its heartwarming story and surprising mystery to the classic film Babe. Director Kyle Balda and writer Mazin have cleverly combined emotional moments with a twisty, engaging whodunit.

The new Amazon MGM Studios film features Hugh Jackman as George Hardy, a shepherd who is mysteriously killed. While people try to figure out what happened, George’s sheep take matters into their own hooves, working together to investigate his death and find the killer.

Ramsey voices the character Zora, one of the sheep, and is joined by a stellar cast including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Chris O’Dowd, Brett Goldstein, and Rhys Darby who voice the other sheep. The live-action cast features Emma Thompson, Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Tosin Cole, Molly Gordon, Hong Chau, Conleth Hill, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, and Mandeep Dhillon.

Director Kyle Balda is known for his work on popular family movies like Despicable Me, Minions, The Lorax, and several films from Pixar. He’s joined by producers Lindsay Doran, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner on The Sheep Detectives.

Craig Mazin is the creative lead behind HBO’s popular series, The Last of Us. The show is adapted from the critically acclaimed video game series of the same name, created by Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley.

Following a devastating fungal outbreak that turned people into zombies, The Last of Us centers on Joel Miller and Ellie’s dangerous struggle to survive in a changed world. Season 3 is currently being filmed in British Columbia, Canada, and is projected to debut in 2027.

Ramsey plays Ellie, but many viewers will recognize them from their role as Lyanna Mormont in the later seasons of Game of Thrones, which earned them a SAG Award nomination. They’ve also appeared in films and series like Holmes & Watson, Judy, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, and His Dark Materials.

Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are back together for their new show, The Sheep Detectives, which is a lot more fun and suitable for families than their previous hit, The Last of Us.

The Sheep Detectives is entering a crowded movie market. It will be released alongside Mortal Kombat II and during the second week of The Devil Wears Prada 2. Just two weeks after that, the new Star Wars film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, will hit cinemas.

The Sheep Detectives will be released in theaters on Friday, May 8, 2026.
