Super Mario Galaxy Hits Huge Box Office Milestone That Only 2 Video Game Movies Have Reached Before

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is exploring the outer reaches of the box office.

The latest film from Illumination is a follow-up to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was a huge hit based on the classic Nintendo games. That first movie is now one of the top six highest-grossing animated films ever made, and the most successful movie ever adapted from a video game. The new film, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, coming out in 2026, will bring back the original voice actors, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Jack Black as Bowser, Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach.

According to Variety, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is expected to surpass $800 million worldwide by the end of its fourth weekend in theaters. This makes it the first film of 2024 to reach this milestone and only the third video game adaptation ever to do so, following A Minecraft Movie ($961.2 million) and the original Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.361 billion).

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has reached a major box office achievement, becoming the 115th film ever to earn over $800 million worldwide. It has now outperformed many classic and popular movies, including E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Fast & Furious 6, Deadpool, the original Star Wars, Interstellar, and Wicked.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is on track to reach $1 billion globally soon, which would make it the first film of 2026 and the 61st ever to achieve this milestone. Although it hasn’t matched the incredible success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it’s following a similar path. This gives it a good chance of becoming the second highest-grossing movie based on a video game, surpassing A Minecraft Movie.

I’m honestly amazed by how well this movie is doing! Even though critics haven’t been kind – it only has a 43% score on Rotten Tomatoes – people who’ve actually seen it clearly love it. It’s got an 88% ‘Verified Hot’ score from over 10,000 viewers, which is incredible. It just proves that positive word-of-mouth is a really powerful thing, and it’s what’s driving the movie’s success in theaters.
