Season 4 of Reacher concludes Alan Ritchson’s run as the title character on Amazon Prime Video. Despite being a relatively new franchise, the show has successfully distinguished itself from the earlier Reacher movies starring Tom Cruise. Ritchson’s performance is particularly praised for being a more faithful adaptation of the physically imposing protagonist as described in Lee Child’s novels.
Rather than follow the order of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels, the show’s creator, Nick Santora, has chosen to adapt them out of sequence. The first season began with Killing Floor in 2022, while season two moved ahead to the eleventh book, Bad Luck and Trouble, in December 2023. Season three, premiering in February 2025, will be based on the ninth novel, Persuader. Season four is confirmed to adapt Child’s thirteenth book, Gone Tomorrow. This approach works well because the show is structured like a series of standalone stories, so jumping around doesn’t disrupt the overall plot. However, the upcoming season will be the first time the Prime Video series deviates from its existing pattern of adaptation.
Reacher Needed To Move On From Digging Up The Past In Season 4
Before the upcoming fourth season of Reacher, each previous season has focused on events from Jack Reacher’s history. Season one explored the circumstances surrounding the death of Jack’s brother, Joe, during a complex investigation. Season two reunited Jack with his former team from the 110th Special Investigations Unit, after the death of a colleague, Calvin Franz, led them to investigate a series of murders among their friends.
In season 3 of Reacher, Jack’s former student played a key role in driving the plot. He teamed up with DEA agent Susan Duffy while working undercover to expose Zachary Beck’s seemingly legitimate rug business, which was actually a cover for illegal arms dealing. This mission also gave Jack the chance to avenge the murder of Dominique Kohl, who had been killed by Xavier Quinn before the series began.
Season 4 of Reacher will be a completely new story, separate from Jack Reacher’s past. Based on the book Gone Tomorrow, the season follows Reacher after he meets someone on the New York City subway who seems to be planning a suicide attack. This leads him to investigate a complex conspiracy involving terrorism and a crooked politician. Unless Amazon changes the story significantly, season 4 won’t connect to any previous events in Reacher’s life, which is a welcome change for the show.
Reacher Still Needs One Other Change To Its Formula
With the upcoming fourth season of Reacher, and the launch of its first spinoff, Neagley, Prime Video is building on the success it’s had since 2022. This is a great moment for the franchise, especially as the new storyline for Reacher moves away from previously established character history. Both shows are slated to release new episodes this year – dates are still to be announced – and are expected to give Prime Video a strong advantage in the competitive streaming landscape by 2026. Neagley will follow the popular character played by Maria Sten.
The show Reacher has become popular enough that it no longer needs to give Jack Reacher a new love interest each season. While a romantic subplot is understandable, the pattern feels repetitive since these characters never stick around beyond a single season. Season 4 would be a great time to stop this trend, though the possibility of exploring romance again in the future isn’t off the table.
