When Agatha Christie, the famous mystery writer, vanished at the peak of her career, it caused a sensation. A new film about her disappearance has chosen an Academy Award-nominated actress to portray her.
In 1926, the year Agatha Christie published her sixth book, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, she disappeared for almost two weeks. When she returned, she couldn’t remember what had happened. The new mystery, Eleven Missing Days, explores this strange and brief period in her life.
According to Deadline, Felicity Jones will star as Agatha Christie in a new movie that Fortitude International will be shopping to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival this week. Vincent Cassel, known for his role in Black Swan, will co-star as a retired Belgian detective pulled into the mystery – a character reminiscent of Christie’s famous Hercule Poirot.
Bertie Ellwood, known for directing Silo, is helming Eleven Missing Days. The screenplay was written by Ernesto Foronda, who worked on Better Luck Tomorrow. The film is adapted from Jared Cade’s 1998 book, Agatha Christie and the Missing Eleven Days, which focuses on the famous author. Nicole Elizabeth Berger and Oliver Trevena are also in the cast, though their characters haven’t been revealed yet.
1926 was a difficult year for Agatha Christie, marked by personal loss and upheaval. Her mother died in April, and her husband, Archibald, filed for divorce in August. The year culminated in a strange event: Agatha disappeared between December 3rd and 14th. The disappearance followed an argument with Archibald on December 3rd, when he told her he planned to spend the weekend away with friends without her.
Agatha Christie vanished, and the next day, her car was discovered abandoned with outdated identification and clothing inside. This sparked a massive public search, even drawing in the famous author Arthur Conan Doyle, known for creating Sherlock Holmes. Several ideas attempt to explain what happened to her, ranging from a possible car accident causing memory loss to a state of altered consciousness known as a fugue state.
Agatha Christie never publicly discussed her eleven-day disappearance, not even in her autobiography, and the mystery remained unsolved when she passed away in 1976. The event has inspired fictional portrayals in several works, including the movies Agatha (1979) and Agatha and the Truth of Murder (2018), and an episode of Doctor Who called “The Unicorn and the Wasp.”
Felicity Jones has been cast in Eleven Missing Days after a busy 2025. Last year, she appeared in 100 Nights of Hero, Oh. What. Fun., and Train Dreams. She’s also known for her roles in films like The Theory of Everything and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her work in The Brutalist.
Vincent Cassel received the César Award for Best Actor for his role in the 2008 French film Mesrine. He’s also well-known for his work in English-language projects, including Black Swan, Elizabeth, Shrek, the Jason Bourne films, and the Westworld TV series. Before appearing in Eleven Missing Days, he will be seen in the fourth season of The White Lotus.
