The third season of Justin Hartley’s series brought significant changes, and some viewers feel these changes weren’t for the better. Hartley stars as Colter Shaw, an expert in survival who finds missing people and earns rewards for his work. The show, created by Ben H. Winters, is based on the Colter Shaw book series by Jeffery Deaver, especially the novel The Never Game. While the TV show has developed its own path, it still draws inspiration from the original books.
Colter usually works alone or with the police, but he does have a small team assisting him. In the first season of Tracker, his team consisted of tech expert Bobby Exley, and Shaw’s handlers, Velma and Teddi Bruin. However, at the beginning of Season 3, none of those original team members remain, as the actors who played them have left the show. While Tracker quickly added new helpers, these changes unfortunately make the show less compelling.
Who Is Mel in Tracker Season 3?
Tracker Season 3
In Season 3 of Tracker, Colter continues to work with Reenie Green (Fiona Rene), who has been with the show since the beginning, and Randy (Chris Lee), Bobby’s cousin who joined the team last season while Exley was away. The team has grown with the addition of Melanie, or “Mel” (Cassady McClincy Zhang), who Reenie hired to help with her legal work, replacing Velma.
During the premiere, Reenie subtly suggested she needed assistance, mentioning to a busy Randy that she had a stack of resumes to go through. Randy offered to help by reviewing the applications. Later, in Episode 3, he thought Green would be a good fit to work with Mel, a young employee who is a big fan of Reenie’s work.
In Season 3, Episode 3 of Tracker, when Reenie officially brought Mel onto the team, Colter’s new group began to come together, giving viewers a first look at how it would function. Although Mel wasn’t initially hired for Colter’s bounty hunting, Reenie and Randy quickly involved her in their current case. As the series continued, it became clear that Mel offered a valuable and different perspective to the team.
Tracker Replaced Velma and Teddi Bruin From Tracker Seasons 1 and 2
The new characters on Tracker each have unique personalities, but generally, Randy now handles the tech and intel work that Bobby used to do, and Mel has stepped into a supporting role at Reenie’s law office, similar to what Velma did. However, Mel isn’t taking over Velma’s original job. Instead, Reenie is now the one who assigns cases to Colter. Overall, Mel fills the void left by Colter’s former teammates, Velma and Teddi, who were originally responsible for handling his cases from the start of the series.
The characters Teddi and Velma were inspired by a couple from Deaver’s books, also named Teddi and Velma. In the books, they took on odd jobs for Colter Shaw and cared for his house while he traveled in a Winnebago. Although the show Tracker gave Colter a more modern Airstream trailer and less of a fixed home – sometimes only staying at his childhood home or Reenie’s office – the first season of the show still kept Teddi and Velma in their original roles. This simple, down-to-earth setup, taken from the books, helped make Tracker stand out from other shows.
Despite their connection on the show, Velma and Teddi’s time together didn’t last long, as actress Erin Weigert left Tracker after its first season. When the show continued, Velma told Reenie that Teddi was now helping her mother and that they’d broken up because Velma was creating problems and tension in their relationship.
Following McEnany’s departure from the show before the second season of Tracker, Reenie told Randy she’d focused on reconciling with Teddi. While she succeeded in fixing her marriage, this meant the end of Colter’s original team.
Velma’s Tracker Replacement Traded Off Some of the Show’s Charm
Replacing Velma on Tracker meant losing some of the special connection she and her wife brought to the show. While Mel is a good addition, she doesn’t offer the same dynamic – Velma and Teddi, with their age difference and unique personalities, really stood out, especially filming from their home in Northern Florida. Viewers loved seeing them live their lives with their pets, playfully arguing with Colter over video chat, and enjoying everyday moments like cooking or having a glass of wine.
Teddi and Velma had a particularly close relationship with Colter, acting as parental figures since his own parents, Mary Dove and Ashton, were preoccupied with their own issues. The Bruins, unlike most people, weren’t overly impressed by Colter’s accomplishments, which helped ground the show and made Hartley’s character more relatable.
These characters were key to what made the show unique. Without them, it feels much more like a standard crime show, focusing on Reenie, Randy, and Mel solving cases from Green’s Denver office.
