Netflix’s latest crime series, a seven-episode action thriller, has quickly become the most-watched show on the streaming platform globally.
The platform’s newest action show quickly became a hit around the world after its release. Netflix has already produced many popular action series, like the current thriller The Night Agent and the completed South Korean drama Weak Hero. These shows have established action as a key genre on the streaming service, and viewers have come to expect exciting action series from Netflix.
Netflix’s latest offering is Man on Fire, a seven-part series based on the A.J. Quinnell novel. While taking inspiration from the 2004 film starring Denzel Washington, the show features Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as John Creasy, a former soldier haunted by his past and struggling with PTSD. His life takes a dramatic turn when he meets a young girl who needs his protection, leading him on a surprising journey of revenge. As of today, Man on Fire has received mostly positive reviews, with a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to FlixPatrol, the new series Man on Fire is currently the most popular TV show on Netflix worldwide, having reached number one just one day after its release. As of May 1, 2026, it’s also the top show in 22 countries, including Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Bulgaria, Greece, Jamaica, Nigeria, Poland, and Venezuela. In the United States, Man on Fire launched at number two, behind the docuseries Should I Marry a Murderer?
The Netflix series stands apart from previous adaptations, particularly in how it explores John’s inner thoughts and delivers plenty of exciting action. It’s also unique because it draws from both the original novel and its sequel, The Perfect Kill, creating a fresh storyline. The cast, including Taylour Abdul-Mateen II who gives a standout performance, further enhances this new take on the story.
Kyle Killen, who also co-created the Halo TV series on Paramount+, developed the Man on Fire TV adaptation. He wrote all seven episodes, and the series was directed by Stephen Caple Jr., Vicente Amorim, Clare Kilner, and Michael Cuesta. Early signs suggest the show is popular worldwide, with viewers appreciating its take on the original story. It currently has a 70% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating strong positive reception.
After just one day, “Man on Fire” is proving to be another hit action series for Netflix. If it maintains its popularity, it has the potential to become a long-term favorite on the platform, adding to Netflix’s growing collection of both original and well-known action stories.
