I’m so excited! One of my favorite action movies, the one that really showed everyone what John Krasinski could do and led to him landing the Jack Ryan role, is now available to stream again. It’s a total win for action fans like me!
John Krasinski is best known for playing Jim Halpert on The Office, but he’s become a successful director and actor in his own right. He gained recognition directing and starring in the horror films A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II, alongside his wife, Emily Blunt. He also starred as Jack Ryan in the Prime Video series of the same name. Before those roles, Krasinski appeared in an action film that helped launch his career as an action star, and it’s now available to stream again.
Michael Bay’s 2016 action film, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, is now available on streaming. Starring John Krasinski, the movie tells the true story of the six-man security team who bravely defended the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi during the attacks on September 11, 2012.
You can now watch 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi on Paramount+ after its 2016 release in theaters. It’s also available to stream for free with ads on Pluto TV and Tubi, or you can rent or buy it on Prime Video starting at just $3.99.
The show stars John Krasinski, along with James Badge Dale, Pablo Schreiber, Max Martini, David Denman, and Dominic Fumusa, who play members of the security team. Toby Stephens, Alexia Barlier, and David Costabile appear in supporting roles. The story is based on Mitchell Zuckoff’s 2014 book and was adapted for the screen by Chuck Hogan.
Despite receiving mixed reactions from critics – earning a 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes – 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi was considered a surprisingly restrained and mature film for director Michael Bay, though some felt it didn’t fully capture the emotional impact of the real events. Audiences responded much more positively, giving it an 83% score, and the film also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound Mixing.
I remember when The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi came out in January 2016 – it just didn’t seem to catch on with audiences. It only earned about $69 million globally, which was a pretty low number for a Michael Bay film. Honestly, it barely covered its $50 million production cost, making it one of his least successful movies.
Despite its release some time ago, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is considered the film that launched John Krasinski’s career as an action star. This led to his starring role as Jack Ryan in the Prime Video series of the same name, with Michael Bay as one of the producers. While the series concluded in 2023, a new Jack Ryan film, Ghost War, is scheduled for release on May 20th.
