Prime Video has a lot of psychological thrillers, but one of their recent, shorter shows is a standout for anyone who loves a suspenseful story with unexpected twists. Psychological thrillers are really popular right now, with shows like the adaptation of Alice Feeney’s His & Hers and the new Netflix series The Hunting Wives offering plenty of dark and gripping entertainment.
Netflix has some well-known psychological thrillers like You and Mindhunter, but Prime Video is also delivering strong content in this genre. In 2023, Donald Glover’s series Swarm offered a disturbing look into the mind of an obsessed music fan. Then, in 2025, Prime Video adapted Michelle Frances’ novel The Girlfriend, actually improving on the original story. Most recently, 56 Days brought a fresh take to the erotic thriller, focusing on a couple keeping secrets from one another.
Despite HBO acquiring the anticipated thriller Dark Places, a standout psychological series from Prime Video, Dead Ringers, slipped out with little promotion back in April 2023. This series, loosely based on the classic 1988 film starring Jeremy Irons, features Rachel Weisz playing dual roles as Beverly and Elliot Mantle. The show centers on these identical twin gynecologists, who are both driven and unconventional, and share every aspect of their lives.
Dead Ringers Features Two Of Rachel Weisz’s Best Performances
The other characters in Dead Ringers, including their relationships and struggles with addiction, suffer as the story progresses and things get more intense. The 2023 version of Dead Ringers generally follows the same plot as the original, but its main characters are more relatable, and the show created by Alice Birch feels faster-paced and more chaotic than David Cronenberg’s famously cold and unsettling film.
Weisz delivers two of her strongest performances as Elliot and Beverly, creating distinct characters with nuanced choices rather than over-the-top acting. The show could have easily focused solely on these two leads, but Weisz’s restrained performances allow the supporting characters to shine and keep viewers equally invested in everyone’s stories, including those of the complex and captivating twin protagonists.
Elliot is a bold and unconventional scientist who’s primarily focused on exploring the limits of genetic research while still securing financial support. This puts her at odds with her twin sister, Beverly, who is deeply committed to empowering women within a flawed healthcare system. Their differing viewpoints create sharp and insightful social commentary, as Elliot defends accepting money from potentially problematic sources, while Beverly prefers to keep their work ethically sound.
Dead Ringers Is One Of Prime Video’s Most Acclaimed Psychological Thrillers Ever
Critics loved Dead Ringers, especially Rachel Weisz’s performance playing two roles, and the show quickly became one of the streaming service’s best psychological thrillers. However, because popular shows like Invincible and The Boys often get more attention, many viewers missed Dead Ringers despite the positive reviews. Similar to the 2018 thriller Homecoming, it didn’t reach as wide an audience as it might have on a platform like Netflix.
Netflix has built a strong reputation for psychological thrillers, consistently delivering twisty stories and unreliable characters that viewers expect. While Prime Video has also produced thrillers like The Girlfriend, Swarm, and Dead Ringers, its popular shows such as Reacher and Cross give it more of a feel for straightforward action thrillers – often described as ‘Dad TV’ – rather than complex stories about flawed characters.
Dead Ringers Is The Perfect Gender-Flipped Reboot
I honestly think this new take on Dead Ringers is something special. It’s not just a remake for the sake of it – it genuinely improves on the original! Swapping the doctors’ genders isn’t just a gimmick; it actually changes the story in a really compelling way. It makes Beverly and Elliot feel more relatable, and honestly, it makes their darker sides even more unsettling because you find yourself initially hoping they succeed. It’s a brilliant reimagining, and it truly justifies why it needed to be made.
David Cronenberg’s film quietly challenges the traditional, male-dominated medical world by telling the story of two detached doctors who see patients – and often people in general – as simply collections of organs. The 2023 version of Dead Ringers features Beverly and Elliot, both committed feminists who want to improve care for female patients. However, their differing methods ultimately push them to dangerous limits, mirroring the troubling actions of the characters in the original film.
As the plot of Dead Ringers develops, Elliot’s efforts to exploit flaws in the healthcare system and Beverly’s wish to avoid the unethical financial aspects of medicine collide in surprising ways. Unlike Cronenberg’s original film, this version focuses less on graphic violence and more on the characters’ internal struggles and emotional breakdown. While the story’s central relationship is explored through a gender-swapped lens, it remains deeply unsettling.
Instead, Birch’s adaptation is a genuinely exciting and fresh take on the original story, offering a new perspective on a well-known plot. If more gender-swapped remakes approached the source material with this level of care, we could see a wave of clever, thought-provoking shows that truly stand out. Unfortunately, the fact that Prime Video’s Dead Ringers hasn’t found a large audience since its 2023 release shows that this kind of effort doesn’t always succeed, especially when creators are competing for attention in today’s crowded streaming world.
