Netflix’s Man on Fire Outdoes the Original With Solid Rotten Tomatoes Score

Action fans have plenty to choose from, with Prime Video offering hits like Reacher and Jack Ryan. But Netflix is stepping up its game with a brand new, promising series.

This new TV series is based on A.J. Quinnell’s 1980 novel of the same name, originally directed and produced by Tony Scott. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, known for his roles in Aquaman and Wonder Man, plays a former mercenary seeking revenge. Soon after its release, Man on Fire has already received better reviews than the original, earning a 71% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Based on seven reviews, the new film is receiving mostly positive feedback, with five out of seven being favorable. It’s performing significantly better than the 2004 version, which received a 39% rating from critics but a strong 89% audience approval. Currently, Netflix’s Man on Fire doesn’t have a publicly available audience score.

What Are Critics Saying About Man on Fire?

I’m really excited about the early buzz surrounding the new movie based on that popular book! Everyone’s saying the action is fantastic and the acting is top-notch, especially from Abdul-Matten II. What’s really surprised people, though, is how emotionally powerful it is. Dani Kessel Odom from ScreenRant even called it a “must-watch,” and that’s saying something!

Brooks commends the new adaptation for offering a unique take on the character, much like how Jack Ryan became more developed after the original novels.

The review notes the show is more focused on dramatic storytelling than constant action. This means the exciting moments fans expect from the genre might not have the same impact for everyone. However, the series ultimately works because it effectively tells an emotionally resonant story.

What Happens in Man on Fire?

Yahya Abdul-Matten II stars as John Creasy, a former Special Forces soldier hoping to leave his troubled past behind. However, Creasy must confront his inner struggles, and soon finds himself thrust back into dangerous action, fighting for survival.

The cast of Man on Fire includes Billie Boullet, known for World-Breaker, as Poe Rayburn, and Alice Braga (City of God) as Valeria Melo. Scoot McNairy (True Detective) and Bobby Cannavale (The Watcher, Scarpetta) appear as guest stars, playing Henry Tappen and Paul Rayburn.

Kyle Killen, the showrunner for Man on Fire, praised the casting of Yahya Abdul-Matten, telling Tudum that Abdul-Matten is incredibly versatile. He explained that he didn’t see one specific quality that reminded him of John Creasy, but rather Abdul-Matten’s broad acting abilities were exactly what the role needed.

Man on Fire Season 1 is streaming on Netflix.
