Luke Grimes particularly loves one scene from Yellowstone – a classic Dutton family moment that wasn’t repeated throughout the show’s five seasons. Yellowstone became a massive television hit on Paramount Network, establishing the Dutton family’s Montana story as a successful franchise created by Taylor Sheridan. Now, Grimes stars in Marshals, a spin-off of Yellowstone that’s found success on CBS.
The story of the Dutton family in Yellowstone and its earlier chapters, 1883 and 1923, is filled with hardship and loss. The series Yellowstone begins with Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), the youngest son of John Dutton III (Kevin Costner), returning to the family ranch after a period away. He had previously left to live with his wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), and their son, Tate (Breckin Merrill), on the Broken Rock reservation.
Kayce Dutton is haunted by his family name and the constant threat of violence. In the first episode of Yellowstone, he hesitantly introduces his son, Tate, to his grandfather and uncles, Lee and Jamie, at the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. This visit offered a fleeting moment of peace for the Duttons, a brief reprieve from their usual struggles that would never happen again.
The Dutton Men Rode Together For The First & Only Time In Yellowstone’s Series Premiere
As a huge fan of Yellowstone, I always appreciated that Taylor Sheridan, who helmed the very first episode, included something truly special – a scene of all the Dutton men together: John, Lee, Jamie, Kayce, and young Tate, all riding as a unit. It was a fleeting moment, the only time the entire group shared that experience throughout the whole series. I remember being captivated watching them first rounding up buffalo on horseback, then switching gears to a peaceful fishing trip in the river. It really felt like a core memory for them, and a beautiful one for us to witness.
Later, the Dutton brothers and Tate relaxed around a campfire. Lee and Jamie wondered why Kayce had decided to raise his son on the Broken Rock reservation, leading to a heated argument between Lee and Kayce. The argument ended abruptly when Tate stepped in to defend his father, throwing his fish at Lee and angrily calling him a name, which unexpectedly made the brothers burst out laughing.
Luke Grimes shared with Entertainment Weekly that the scene featuring Marshals was actually how he auditioned for Yellowstone. He explained that performing that scene on the day was a memorable experience and believes it’s one of the best he was a part of on the entire show.
Jamie and fans of Yellowstone both felt a sense of optimism, as the show highlighted with the line, “It’s a good day.” Looking back, the campfire scene with the Dutton men is especially poignant and emotional, knowing it was a unique moment that wouldn’t be repeated.
In the very first episode of Yellowstone, Lee is killed by Monica’s brother, marking the beginning of a series of unfortunate events for the Dutton family over the show’s five seasons.
Yellowstone Ended With The Duttons Torn Apart
The heartwarming scene of the Dutton men together at the start of Yellowstone‘s latest season wasn’t the last time the family was complete. Episode 3 showed us, through a flashback, that the Duttons first experienced loss when John’s wife, Evelyn (played by Gretchen Moll), tragically died in an accident on March 30, 1997. John was deeply affected by her death, and it remained a painful memory throughout his life.
Shortly after becoming Governor of Montana, John Dutton was killed by assassins hired by his rivals, with his son Jamie unknowingly involved. This sudden death was written by Taylor Sheridan after Kevin Costner left Yellowstone during its fifth and final season. However, it’s likely Sheridan always intended for John to die by the end of the show.
In the final episode of Yellowstone, Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler killed Jamie in retaliation for their father’s death and secretly disposed of his body at the train station. With Jamie gone, Beth and Kayce were the last of John Dutton’s children remaining. Kayce then sold the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch to the Broken Rock reservation, and both he and Beth went on to live separate lives with their families.
After 140 years, the Dutton family no longer controls the Yellowstone ranch. Though Kayce and Beth—who has moved to South Texas for a new show called Dutton Ranch—might reconnect in the future, their family’s dominance over the Montana land is finished. Despite this, neither Beth nor Kayce has any regrets about leaving their family’s way of life behind.
Watching the first episode of Yellowstone is even more meaningful now that we know how the Dutton family’s story ends. Seeing the Dutton men enjoying simple moments together – riding horses, fishing, and laughing – feels particularly precious when you rewatch it.
