Even after five years, the deaths of Gordo and Tracy in season 2 of For All Mankind remain deeply sad. Now, season 5 jumps to 2012, where Happy Valley on Mars has grown into a successful settlement of thousands and is attempting to become independent from Earth. It’s a future they would have been amazed to see, if they had survived.

In season 5, episode 3 of For All Mankind, Admiral Ed Baldwin (Joel Kinnaman) passed away after a battle with cancer at the age of 81. He was one of the last surviving members of the original group of NASA astronauts featured in season 1, the pioneers who first ventured into space and established a lasting American presence on the moon.

The death of Ed Baldwin signaled the end of an era for the original astronauts in For All Mankind, leaving Danielle Poole as the last surviving member of that pioneering generation. As the show jumps forward in time by about a decade with each season, it has gradually removed most of its initial characters.

Yet the deaths of two of For All Mankind‘s earliest heroes remain particularly haunting.

I’m Still Not Over Tracy & Gordo’s Deaths In For All Mankind Season 2

The final moments of Tracy and Gordo Stevens in season 2 of For All Mankind remain incredibly heartbreaking. The divorced couple bravely sacrificed themselves to prevent a nuclear disaster at NASA’s Jamestown base in 1983. Despite their best efforts and makeshift spacesuits, they couldn’t survive the radiation on the moon’s surface and tragically died together after returning to the airlock.

Gordo and Tracy were two of the most beloved characters in For All Mankind. While Gordo struggled with alcohol and had a complicated personal life, he was also incredibly charismatic. Tracy was consistently admirable – a dedicated mother and a courageous astronaut, with her only real mistake being a minor rule break at Jamestown. After Tracy remarried in season 2 of For All Mankind, Gordo made a determined effort to win her back, even going to the moon.

Throughout the first season of For All Mankind, we rooted for Gordo as he battled back from a mental health crisis brought on by his time on the moon and his worry about losing Tracy. We hoped he’d recover and return to space, and that he and Tracy would find their way back to each other. The show delivered that reunion, but in a deeply sad and emotional way.

The show For All Mankind has delivered some heartbreaking deaths. While Deke Slayton’s passing at the end of season one was sad, and the deaths of Karen Baldwin and Molly Cobb in the season three finale were truly devastating, the loss of Gordo and Tracy remains particularly impactful. They were such well-loved and heroic characters, and their deaths, though poignant, still feel deeply painful.

Tracy & Gordo’s Deaths Still Impact For All Mankind In Season 5

The deaths of Gordo and Tracy Stevens continue to have a significant impact on the story of For All Mankind. Most notably, their sacrifice deeply affected their sons, Danny (Casey W. Johnson) and Jimmy Stevens (David Chandler).

In the first season of For All Mankind, Danny and Jimmy faced difficulties as children due to their parents’ failing marriage, and were placed in the care of Karen Baldwin. These problems continued into adulthood, and after losing their parents, both Danny and Jimmy ultimately became antagonists, each in their own way.

In season 3 of For All Mankind, Danny continued to be deeply in love with Karen, but his obsession became unhealthy. His declining mental health and intense dislike of Ed Baldwin created problems for NASA, the Soviets, and Helios’s mission to Mars. As a result, he was exiled from Happy Valley and tragically took his own life.

Jimmy, lost and misguided, joined a group of American terrorists who opposed NASA. He participated in the bombing of the Johnson Space Center, and though he had a late change of heart, it wasn’t in time to save Karen. In contrast, Gordo and Tracy’s sons grew up to be very different from them.

Season 5 of For All Mankind brought back Avery Jarrett (played by Ines Asserson), who is revealed to be Danny Stevens’ daughter. Now grown up and training to be a Marine, Avery is dealing with the fallout from her father’s controversial past, as well as her own internal struggles and potential emotional issues.

In For All Mankind, Avery Jarrett’s struggles stem from a family history marked by loss, beginning with the deaths of her grandparents, Gordo and Tracy Stevens, before she was even born. While tragedy runs deep within the Stevens family, it also means Tracy and Gordo’s legacy lives on.
