A second season of Scarpetta is planned, and here’s what we know so far about the next installment of this Prime Video crime thriller. The series is based on the long-running Kay Scarpetta book series by Patricia Cornwell, which began in 1990 and currently includes 29 novels. Season 1 premiered on March 11, 2026.
Dr. Kay Scarpetta, played by Nicole Kidman, is a forensic pathologist who relies on cutting-edge technology to solve complex crimes. The series also stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana DeBose, Bobby Cannavale, and Simon Baker. All eight episodes of Scarpetta were released simultaneously, and the first season currently holds an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The first season of Scarpetta is a gripping and intense crime drama that jumps between different time periods and locations, but remains well-told and features strong acting. With nearly 30 novels in the book series, there’s ample material for future seasons. Here’s the latest information about Scarpetta season 2.
Scarpetta Season 2 Is Confirmed
Prime Video ordered two seasons of Scarpetta at the same time in 2024, as reported by Deadline. While there haven’t been any updates on season 2 since then, the first season was well-received, suggesting plans for a second season are still likely to move forward.
Scarpetta Season 2 Cast Details
Although the official cast for season 2 of Scarpetta hasn’t been released yet, it’s likely we’ll see familiar faces return. Nicole Kidman, who plays Kay Scarpetta, and Jamie Lee Curtis, playing her sister Dorothy, are almost certainly coming back – and they’re also producers on the show, making their return even more probable.
| Possible Scarpetta Season 2 Cast | |
|---|---|
| Cast | Characters |
| Nicole Kidman | Kay Scarpetta |
| Rosy McEwen | Young Kay Scarpetta |
| Jamie Lee Curtis | Dorothy Scarpetta |
| Amanda Righetti | Young Dorothy Scarpetta |
| Ariana DeBose | Lucy Farinelli-Watson |
| Savannah Lumar | Young Lucy Farinelli-Watson |
| Bobby Canavale | Pete Marino |
| Jake Canavale | Young Pete Marino |
| Simon Baker | Benton Wesley |
| Hunter Parish | Young Benton Wesley |
The cast will welcome back Ariana DeBose as Lucy Farinelli-Watson, Dorothy’s daughter, along with Bobby Cannavale as ex-detective Pete Marino, and Simon Baker as FBI profiler Benton Wesley. Rosy McEwen, Amanda Righetti, Savannah Lumar, Jake Cannavale, and Hunter Parish will also reprise their roles as younger versions of Kay, Dorothy, Lucy, Pete, and Benton, respectively.
Scarpetta Season 2 Story Details
Season one of Scarpetta is based on two novels by Patricia Cornwell: her first book, Postmortem (1990), and Autopsy (2021). The show closely follows the stories as Scarpetta investigates a serial killer and defends the validity of a pivotal case she solved 28 years earlier.
Combining two books from the series into a single season is a bit unexpected, especially since they weren’t written close together in time. However, it seems to be working well so far. Given the large number of books in the overall series, Nicole Kidman and Curtis will need to find inventive ways to bring the whole story to life.
It’s unclear which books the second season of Scarpetta will cover, but if Prime Video follows the pattern of season one, it might adapt the second book, Body of Evidence (1991), and the twenty-sixth, Livid (2022). This storyline would likely involve the murder of a secluded author at her home, following a period of threatening phone calls.
Scarpetta Season 2 Production Updates
Connie Chornuk / Prime
We haven’t received any updates about Scarpetta season 2 since it was first announced in 2024. Considering season 1 didn’t premiere until March 2026, it’s understandable – Nicole Kidman and Jamie Curtis have been busy promoting the first season, so news about a potential second season has been quiet.
Once things calm down after the first season, we’ll likely learn more about a potential second season of Scarpetta. Since plans for season 2 were made alongside season 1, filming might already be underway, meaning we could return to Dr. Kay’s world sooner than expected.
