Apple TV’s hit sci-fi series that began a shared universe is faring well with critics for season 2.
The second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has launched with a respectable, though slightly lower, score on Rotten Tomatoes. This season moves the story to Skull Island, where the characters investigate the research being done by Apex Cybernetics and face a significant global threat from a mysterious Titan known as Titan X.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is receiving generally positive feedback, though slightly less enthusiastic reviews than its first season. Currently, season 2 has a 70% rating based on 10 reviews. The first season performed better, earning a “Certified Fresh” score of 87% from critics after 87 reviews.
Reviews for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 praise its expanded storyline, featuring more intense action, improved visual effects, and exciting monster battles. The season is particularly noted for its grand, cinematic scope and the looming danger presented by the arrival of Titan X.
Despite some positive reception, critics have noted significant weaknesses in the writing. These mainly stem from conflicts between characters in Monarch feeling forced and unnecessarily dramatic. Additionally, the show spends too much time setting up a possible third season, particularly in the later episodes, which makes it less captivating.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is the first television series set in the Monsterverse, with more shows planned for Apple TV+ in the future. One of these upcoming series will be a prequel focusing on a young Lee Shaw (played by Wyatt Russell) as he investigates a dangerous Titan during the Cold War. Additional TV shows are also in development.
Plus, there are more Monsterverse projects on the way! The sixth film, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is scheduled for release on March 26, 2027. Although it’s unknown if the second season of Monarch will connect directly to the movie, the show promises lots of Titan-related action, despite some focus on character relationships and conflicts.
Even though the Rotten Tomatoes score for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is a bit lower than the first season, most reviews are still good. With its impressive action and special effects, the show seems poised to capture all the thrilling elements fans love about the Monsterverse.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 premieres Friday, February 27 on Apple TV.
