‘Indiana Jones’ Animated Series Was in Development Before Being Shut Down by Lucasfilm

Following Kathleen Kennedy’s departure from Lucasfilm, more information is coming out about projects in the works, including two different Indiana Jones series. According to The Wrap, Rodrigo Blaas, who directed Star Wars: Visions, was creating an animated Indiana Jones show nicknamed “Reggie” – a reference to the pet snake from the opening scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark. The series would have featured new adventures for Indiana Jones, taking place between the events of the original movies.

In 2022, Lucasfilm was also working on a live-action series about Abner Ravenwood, a character mentioned in Raiders of the Lost Ark as the father of Marion Ravenwood and a mentor to Indiana Jones. It’s unknown if either this series or the one about Regé-Jean Page were canceled, but it’s probable both projects were paused before the release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny in 2023.

‘Blank Check’ Co-Host Griffin Newman Hinted at a Scrapped ‘Indiana Jones’ Series in 2025

Rumors of an animated Indiana Jones series at Lucasfilm have circulated before. Back in March 2025, actor Griffin Newman mentioned on his podcast, Blank Check with Griffin and David, that he auditioned for a project he thought was an animated Indiana Jones show. He described it as being similar in style to the earlier years of Indiana Jones, focusing on a younger version of the character—more like the River Phoenix portrayal than the later Young Indiana Jones series.

A long time ago, I auditioned for a project initially called “Untitled Star Wars Project.” But when I read the script pages, it quickly became clear it was actually a young Indiana Jones animated series. Usually, these projects are disguised – you’ll see something like “Untitled Lucasfilm Project” and realize it’s secretly Star Wars. This one was different. They actually labeled it “Untitled Star Wars Cartoon Show,” which was funny because the characters had alien names, but the story was about students at a university studying adventurers and collecting artifacts. It felt like they were using the Star Wars label as a way to hide the fact that it was really an Indiana Jones show.

Newman explained that the planned show was cancelled, and he believes it was because of the challenges with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. He said the production team decided to prioritize Dial of Destiny and put the other show on hold.

As recently as 2022, Disney+ was considering both an animated Indiana Jones series and a series focused on Abner Ravenwood, especially while Bob Chapek was CEO and pushing for more streaming content. However, these projects were probably paused after Bob Iger returned as Disney’s CEO in November 2022, as the company waited to see how the film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny would do.

Despite opening on June 30, 2023, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny didn’t perform well at the box office, earning $384 million on a budget of $352.3 million. This initially seemed to end the Indiana Jones film series, though the video game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, released in October 2024, was a critical success. However, Kathleen Kennedy hinted the franchise might not be finished, stating that while there’s currently no interest in continuing the films, the enduring popularity of Indiana Jones means it could return in the future.
