Cult Street Fighter Series Almost Got a Game of Thrones-Style Sequel

As the new Street Fighter movie approaches, Joey Ansah—the creator of the critically acclaimed but overlooked Assassin’s Fist miniseries—shared that he originally developed a full sequel to his 2014 show. Ansah, a longtime Street Fighter enthusiast, believes his idea could have become a massive hit, comparable to Game of Thrones, but disagreements with those in charge ultimately led to the project being cancelled.

Joey Ansah says Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist could’ve become a ‘Game of Thrones-size TV show’

In a recent interview, actor David Mazouz, known for his role in The Bourne Ultimatum, revealed he wrote a detailed 120-page outline for a follow-up to the series Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist. The planned sequel, titled World Warrior, would have centered around M. Bison’s criminal empire and his famous martial arts tournament.

Joey Ansah revealed to Dexerto that he’s planned out the first two seasons of Street Fighter: World Warrior. He envisioned the first season focusing on the original Street Fighter I tournament, highlighting characters like Geki and Gen. The second season would have then delved into Bison’s World Warrior tournament.

The planned Street Fighter series started strong, drawing interest from several well-known showrunners. However, their ideas for the show didn’t align with what Ansah and Capcom had in mind. Adding to the issues, negotiations with the studios licensed to create the show stalled, leading to the cancellation of the project, known as World Warrior.

Looking back, after making ‘Assassin’s Fist,’ we should have aimed for the absolute lowest-budget TV show possible, but with me maintaining creative control. If it had been successful, we figured funding would follow. We had a real chance to go from that small project to a huge, ‘Game of Thrones’-level television series,” Ansah explained.

Joey Ansah hopes his idea for a darker, more realistic Street Fighter series will eventually be made, but he has alternative plans if it doesn’t happen. He’s considering releasing the story outline publicly or working with Capcom and Udon Entertainment to create a graphic novel based on it.
