James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has clarified his role with The Batman 2. When Gunn announced the new DC Universe (DCU), fans worried about how it would affect Matt Reeves’ The Batman trilogy and its spin-offs. However, it appears there’s no need for concern. Reeves’ series will continue as part of the “Elseworlds” banner, meaning it’s separate from the main DCU but still produced by DC Studios. The next step is The Batman 2, with Reeves completing the script over the summer and production scheduled to begin in the U.K. in early 2026.
So, I was reading James Gunn’s Threads the other day, and he was talking about a typical workday. It’s crazy busy for him! He mentioned he’s helping out the team making The Batman 2 – basically making sure everything’s running smoothly for them. And on top of that, he’s also prepping to direct Man of Tomorrow himself, which isn’t scheduled to shoot until 2026. It’s a lot to juggle, even for someone like him!
Honestly, the best part of my job is that every day is totally different! Right now, I’m mostly focused on getting “Man of Tomorrow” ready – lots of storyboarding, meetings with the different teams, location scouting, and finding the perfect cast. But it’s not just that – I’m also reviewing cuts of “Supergirl” and “Lanterns”, talking about how to market everything, reading new scripts and giving feedback, and making sure the “Batman 2” team has what they need. Oh, and I’m really excited to finally see a first cut of “Clayface”! Plus, there’s always a ton of design work to approve for all the projects. I’m probably forgetting a bunch of stuff, to be honest, it’s a whirlwind!
In the same Threads post, Gunn also shared details about his daily work as co-CEO of DC Studios. He described reviewing early versions of upcoming projects, talking about marketing plans, and giving feedback on new scripts.
Even though The Batman 2 isn’t part of James Gunn’s main DC Universe, he should still be involved in its development, especially as the 2027 Elseworlds movie gets closer to production. Gunn has previously dismissed claims that the planned ‘Crime Saga’ (which includes The Batman 2) wasn’t his responsibility, stating that “All new DC films are under DC Studios” (as he posted on Threads).
It’s not known if James Gunn has reviewed the final script for The Batman 2, but he called an earlier draft “great” after Matt Reeves finished it over the summer. Gunn did give some feedback on The Penguin spin-off, but emphasized he didn’t offer much because the team was already “creating something incredible” that needed little adjustment, according to Everything DCU.
James Gunn likely has positive things to say about the script for The Batman 2, which has been praised as exceptionally well-made and innovative. Fans will have to wait until October 1, 2027, to see the movie, starring Robert Pattinson, and judge for themselves.
Why Fans Shouldn’t Worry About James Gunn’s Role in The Batman 2

With Matt Reeves starting work on The Batman 2 around the same time James Gunn is filming Man of Tomorrow next year, Gunn likely won’t be heavily involved in the day-to-day production of either film. Both sequels are currently planned for release in 2027, which is shaping up to be a huge year for superhero movies.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, James Gunn said he spent very little time on the Supergirl set, even though he was heavily involved in writing the script. He also emphasized that director Craig Gillespie was largely left to direct the film as he saw fit.
Just like with other projects, James Gunn will primarily focus on the Superman sequel for most of next year, allowing Matt Reeves creative freedom with The Batman 2. However, Gunn will still likely review scripts, provide feedback on early footage, and contribute to the film’s large-scale marketing efforts once production starts.
People are worried James Gunn’s usual lighthearted and comedic approach to superheroes, which has been present in his DC projects so far, might overshadow the darker, more realistic tone Matt Reeves is building for Gotham.
Fans don’t need to worry, as James Gunn has stated that each project from DC Studios will have its own unique style and atmosphere. And for anyone still concerned about the future of the darker, crime-focused stories, the success of The Penguin – a project that developed after Gunn’s arrival – demonstrates that The Batman 2 is still being handled with care and vision.
