“Greetings and felicitations, New York Comic Con. ‘Tis I, Stephen Colbert,” he began in a video message presented at the panel. “Folks, I’m sorry I couldn’t be with you in person today, but I’m a perfectionist, and I just didn’t have enough bunting for my Mugato cosplay,” he said, referring to the ape-like Star Trek species.

Colbert excitedly shared that he’ll be voicing the digital dean of students on *Star Trek: Starfleet Academy*. He joked that one of his actual lines on the show would be, “Attention Ensign Krebs, your Talaxian fur fly has exited the replicator and is now mating with itself. Please report to Science Lab 1 immediately. Children are watching.”

“I’m thrilled to join this universe that I have loved for so long, and unlike my on-camera cast mates, I’m thrilled to join it without spending four hours in hair and makeup every day,” Colbert added.

Starfleet Academy Takes Place in the Discovery Timeline

Holly Hunter stars as the Chancellor of Starfleet Academy. The roles of the Starfleet cadets are played by Sandro Rosta, Kerrice Brooks, and George Hawkins. The cast also features Bella Shepard, Zoë Steiner, Tig Notaro, Robert Picardo, and special appearances by Oded Fehr and Mary Wiseman, with Gina Yashere and Paul Giamatti returning as guest stars.

Set roughly a century after the devastating event known as “The Burn” – the same timeframe as the last three seasons of *Discovery* – *Star Trek: Starfleet Academy* focuses on the lives of a new group of cadets. The series follows their experiences as they train to become Starfleet officers, dealing with the challenges of new friendships, intense rivalries, and first romances. All the while, they must also confront a dangerous new threat that puts both the Academy and the Federation at risk.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will premiere on Jan. 15, 2026, on Paramount+.
