Many consider *Knocked Up* a classic from the 2000s, and I was a big fan when it came out. It tells the story of Allison, a woman focused on her career, who unexpectedly becomes pregnant after a one-night encounter. Seeing it listed on Netflix’s 2025 schedule, I rewatched it for the first time in over a decade and was surprised to find that a particular subplot remains as funny and insightful today as it was almost 20 years ago.
The movie *Knocked Up* centers on Allison, played by Katherine Heigl, and her attempt to build a relationship with Ben (Seth Rogen) after finding out they’re expecting a child. Director Judd Apatow filled the film with familiar faces, including many from *Freaks and Geeks*, as well as his own family – a brilliant casting choice. However, the performance that I remembered most vividly was Ryan Seacrest hilariously playing a heightened version of himself.
Allison is a rising star at E! News, and she unexpectedly finds herself on the receiving end of Ryan Seacrest’s famous complaint about celebrities who don’t respect his time.
Okay, so Jessica Simpson was running late for her interview, and the host was *not* happy. He basically said he couldn’t wait around because he had to rush off to *American Idol*. It was clear he was getting really frustrated and was about to launch into something…
Honestly, I’m just baffled by some of the up-and-coming actors and actresses around here. It feels completely backwards. I’m juggling four different gigs myself, and frankly, I’ve got more recognition than a lot of these people! But nobody seems willing to be honest with them. Everyone’s afraid of rocking the boat, because they’re all getting paid by them. No one will just have a direct, honest conversation and tell them to get their act together. And you know what? They consistently mess things up, and it ends up ruining my workday. It really gets under my skin, and I can feel myself getting stressed out just thinking about it.
Somebody get this man a cookie!
While Jessica Simpson might not be the best example of what Ryan Seacrest is talking about, it’s striking how much of his point still rings true. He’s incredibly busy with numerous projects and remains just as, if not more, famous than the celebrities he works with.
It’s amazing to watch Ryan Seacrest now! He’s become the one *doing* the interviews, and everyone seems fascinated by his energy. I recently read on TV Insider that a contestant on *Wheel of Fortune*, Jarri Machelle-Melton, actually asked him, “Do you even sleep?” It’s just a testament to how much he’s always working! He responded to the question with…
Jarri, I’m asleep right now. I sleep in my suit, in case I’m on call.
As a big movie and TV fan, I always think the truly great comedies have a core of truth to them. That’s why I was a little shocked to see Ryan Seacrest do a bit where he was playfully teasing young stars, joking about how they ‘ruin his day.’ It’s funny, but also surprising – I can’t picture him ever saying something like that to the contestants on *Wheel of Fortune*!
I really enjoyed the subplot involving the pregnancy in *Knocked Up*, and it was a highlight of the whole movie, making it worth watching again. You can stream this 2007 comedy now if you have a Netflix subscription.
