Chicago Med‘s eleventh season began by revealing who will be taking over for Maggie Lockwood, and the choice might surprise viewers. Throughout its ten seasons on NBC, One Chicago‘s medical series has seen many of its original actors leave, including Nick Gehlfuss (Will Halstead) and Brian Tee (Ethan Choi). Although Chicago Med Season 10 had moments that made it seem like other characters might leave, only Dominic Rains’ Dr. Crockett Marcel actually departed, and his exit happened off-screen in the very first episode.
Before the premiere of the much-awaited Season 11 of Chicago Med, Deadline announced that Marlyne Barrett is taking a step back from her role as head ER nurse Maggie Lockwood in the One Chicago franchise due to personal reasons. However, the publication described her departure as a “temporary leave.” Barrett’s exit surprised many viewers, especially since she’s been a part of the show since it began in 2015. The first episode of Chicago Med Season 11 briefly explained Maggie’s absence from Gaffney and also introduced her replacement as the new head nurse of the Emergency Department.

Right at the start of the hour, Chicago Med Season 11, Episode 1 featured a conversation between Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) and Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) regarding Maggie’s departure from Gaffney. Charles inquired if Goodwin had spoken with Maggie after she left, but Goodwin responded that she hadn’t heard from her at all.
This week’s central medical story on Chicago Med focused on a family brought to Gaffney after a house fire. The episode highlighted a nurse taking charge while Maggie was away. Chicago Med also revealed that Doris Perez (Lorena Diaz), a familiar face, has officially taken over as Head Nurse of the Emergency Department (ED) following Maggie’s departure.

Goodwin officially acknowledged Doris’s promotion, praising her “exceptional” work in preventing Gaffney’s emergency department from becoming overloaded with incoming patients.
Sharon Goodwin: “Great work today, Doris. Maggie left behind a tough act to follow, but she would have been very proud of how you handled things.”
Doris Perez: “Just keeping them warm ’til she gets back.”
As a long-time viewer, I have to say Doris absolutely nailed her first appearance as the head nurse in the Emergency Department. She really kept everything running smoothly and professionally, even with a constant stream of patients coming in. It’s still up in the air whether Maggie will ever come back, but honestly, Gaffney feels secure with Doris at the helm. She’s a great leader!
Doris first appeared on Chicago Med in Season 4 and has been a regular cast member ever since. Most recently, she played an important part in the story about the nurse’s union, working with Maggie to address concerns about unfair wages and long hours with the doctors.
As a big fan of the Chicago franchise, I’m really excited about Chicago Med! It’s created by Dick Wolf, and the cast is fantastic – you’ve got stars like Jessy Schram, Luke Mitchell, S. Epatha Merkerson, Oliver Platt, Sarah Ramos, and Darren Barnet. I was thrilled to see that Chicago Med Season 11 actually premiered on NBC on October 1, 2025.
Will Maggie Ever Return to Chicago Med?

It’s currently uncertain whether Marlyne Barrett will reprise her role on Chicago Med, but fans are hopeful for Maggie’s return. The latest episode suggested she might not be gone permanently, leaving the door open for a future comeback.
While the premiere of Chicago Med Season 11 didn’t fully clarify Maggie’s departure, Season 10 offered a likely explanation (separate from the publicly stated reason for the actor’s exit). Towards the end of Season 10, the nurses at Gaffney Chicago Hospital engaged in difficult discussions with the hospital administration regarding unacceptable work environments and conditions.
When the disagreement got worse, Maggie and Goodwin had a serious argument, and their relationship suffered as a result. The nurses even resorted to pretending to be sick to show their dissatisfaction, but Gaffney responded by bringing in temporary staff instead.
The difficulties she faced, along with the end of her friendship with Goodwin, likely affected her deeply, potentially leading to her decision to resign or take time off from Gaffney. There’s still optimism that Maggie will return someday, largely because she’s the central figure who holds the Gaffney team together.
