Please be aware that this article contains slight spoilers for The Punisher: One Last Kill. While shorter than a typical episode of a Marvel TV show, the length of The Punisher: One Last Kill fits the story it tells. Jon Bernthal first appeared as The Punisher within the Marvel Cinematic Universe in season one of Daredevil: Born Again, and although he wasn’t in season two, The Punisher: One Last Kill reveals what the character has been up to around that time.
The trailer for The Punisher: One Last Kill suggests the story will focus on Frank’s emotional and psychological state, showing him haunted by past traumas. However, it feels strange to develop a whole new story with such a short final running time.
The Punisher: One Last Kill Has A 48-Minute Runtime
At 48 minutes long (or 45 minutes without credits), The Punisher: One Last Kill tells its story in two parts. The first half focuses on establishing Frank Castle’s situation, while the second half introduces a conflict that drives his story forward.
This short special doesn’t explore the Punisher’s backstory in much detail. Fans primarily want to see the character’s intense, violent action – the same kind of gritty content that made him popular in the former Netflix Marvel shows, which offered a darker tone than most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Marvel Special Presentation Format Is For More Focused Storytelling
Something really cool about The Punisher: One Last Kill is that it’s one of Marvel’s ‘Special Presentations’! As of now, there have only been three of these – and I’m a big fan of how they’re trying new things. The first one was Werewolf by Night in 2022, then The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special came out later that year, and now we’ve got this short, but awesome, look at what Frank Castle is up to.
These stories each seem to concentrate on one particular character, event, or group, with little connection to the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe. This approach works well for a character like Frank Castle, who was already well-developed over two seasons on Netflix, establishing his background and motivations before interacting with characters like Daredevil and Karen Page.
I’m really excited about how this story lets us delve deeper into Frank Castle’s character. It feels like The Punisher: One Last Kill is perfectly setting him up for his role in the MCU, especially with what’s coming in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It’s great to see them building a solid foundation for him before he shows up in other projects.
Frank Castle’s Story Is Abridged In The Punisher: One Last Kill
Readers who enjoy the comic book portrayal of The Punisher will likely appreciate The Punisher: One Last Kill, as it significantly develops his story, particularly given his upcoming importance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The trailer shows The Punisher crossing paths with Spider-Man, and even pointing a gun at him when he interferes.
In this movie, Frank Castle seems to be driven by new goals and missions, and we can expect his story to develop further within the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future.
Despite its short length, The Punisher: One Last Kill delivers exactly what it needs to, effectively using its limited runtime to showcase Jon Bernthal as the lead in his own Marvel Cinematic Universe special.
