Studio Pierrot, the well-known Japanese animation studio responsible for many popular action series, is taking a break from fight scenes in their newest project.
Pierrot, the animation studio famous for high-energy action series like Bleach and Naruto, is trying something new with its Magical Girl Series. Unlike its other shows, this series deliberately avoids battles. Producer Yohei Fukui explained in a recent interview that this ‘no battles’ rule is meant to appeal to viewers who might be tired of constant action in shonen anime.
Studio Pierrot Says Goodbye to Action-Packed Shonen Legacy for a New Magical Girl Era
Before the premiere of Magical Sisters LuluttoLilly on April 5, 2026, Fukui had over ten years of experience in animation production. He explains the reasoning behind taking a completely different direction with this new magical girl series, especially considering the studio is well-known for popular anime like Bleach and Naruto.
We’ve created many action-packed series like Naruto and Bleach, but the producer for Magical Sisters LuluttoLilly was really burned out on fighting, jokingly saying they needed a break from it, according to Fukui.
Studio Pierrot and Bandai Namco Filmworks collaborated on the series, which centers around two sisters who become entangled in a mysterious encounter with something from outer space, and harbor a hidden secret.
Fuu and Rui both unexpectedly gained magical powers after a strange encounter with a spaceship. However, their powers came with two strict conditions: they would only last for a year, and they had to keep them secret from everyone. Neither of them knew the other possessed these abilities, and both decided to pursue careers as idols!
During the interview, Fukui discussed the challenges facing anime viewers today and explained how Magical Sisters LuluttoLily aims to address them. He noted that with so much information constantly available, people are easily overwhelmed. The team wanted to create a relaxing and gentle anime – something viewers could enjoy casually while they relax, rather than a show that demands constant attention.
According to Fukui, Magical Sisters LuluttoLilly was created to compete with other magical girl shows. He also stated that the team wanted to showcase Pierrot’s ability to create compelling magical girl content, despite the studio being known for different types of anime. This ambition presented a significant challenge, given Pierrot’s established reputation.
The sixth installment in Pierrot’s long-running Magical Girl Series, Magical Sisters LuluttoLilly, is now available to stream on the official Bandai Namco Filmworks YouTube channel. The series began in 1983, and after a 28-year gap since the last release, Fancy Lala, the Magic Stage, fans are excited to see its return.
Studio Pierrot is returning to its strengths in action-packed anime this year. In July, they’ll finish the Bleach sequel with the final part of the series. They’re also celebrating the 10th anniversary of Boruto, showing their continued commitment to popular franchises like Naruto and other action titles, even as they explore new genres like magical girl anime.
