Fans won’t be able to watch the new season this fall as originally hoped, following the announcement that the show has been renewed for a third season.
At ABC’s presentation on Tuesday, the network revealed that its family comedy will now air in the middle of the television season. Meanwhile, the highly anticipated reboot of Scrubs will premiere in the fall. This isn’t the first time the Tim Allen sitcom has had a mid-season start; its first season also began mid-season before moving to a fall premiere in its second season.
Ari Goldman, a senior vice president at ABC, explained the decision on Tuesday, clarifying that it wasn’t due to how well or poorly Shifting Gears was performing. Instead, the change was made to capitalize on the renewed popularity of Scrubs after its return to television mid-season.
We’re very pleased with how well Scrubs is doing – it was the most-watched new comedy across all platforms, and the top comedy among adults aged 18-49 on traditional TV this season. We want to maintain that success as we move into the fall. Shifting Gears has also been consistently strong for two seasons, and actually finished its second season even better than the first, which is a great achievement in today’s competitive landscape.
The new comedy Shifting Gears is predicted to follow Scrubs and Abbott Elementary as a mid-season hit. According to Goldman, its return will receive significant promotion alongside major sports and entertainment events early in the year.
