Nathan Mitchell, who plays Black Noir, has a deep understanding of what makes each iteration of the character unique and clearly different from one another.
The suit seems to be cursed. Anyone who wears it will find their goals ultimately blocked, almost as if the suit itself prevents success. That’s where the real sadness of the story lies, and I think that’s true of all the best superhero tales – they always have a tragic element.
Mitchell believes fans truly understand the character of Black Noir. He sees the two versions of Black Noir he’s played as distinct individuals, each bringing their own unique approach to the same role. He hopes viewers will recognize them as two separate people who simply occupied the same position, but played it differently, as they look back on both performances.
Mitchell explored the challenge of portraying a character who remains the same despite being played by a different actor. This required him to rethink how he approached the role of Black Noir for television. He ultimately believes Black Noir is a character full of internal contradictions.
The two versions of Noir were quite different – the first was serious and reserved, while the second was a bit clumsy. Despite these differences, they share a common desire: both want to be real actors, to move beyond their roles as superheroes. The first Noir tries to pursue this dream, but Soldier Boy crushes his ambitions and threatens him. This ultimately ruins his life. He’s then replaced by someone who is an actor, someone also striving for success and looking for guidance on how to portray a character who, ironically, wanted to be an actor himself. The story explores how Noir learns from The Deep that violence can stem from professional rivalry, and how this ultimately leads to his downfall. The creator hopes viewers will see them as two unique individuals with similar journeys.
Nathan Mitchell Reveals How He Found Black Noir’s Voice
Even the surprising reveal of Black Noir was handled thoughtfully. Actor Nathan Mitchell was particularly impressed with the character’s first line, saying it felt like showrunner Eric Kripke understood him perfectly. That single line gave Mitchell a strong sense of who Black Noir was as a character.
As Mitchell developed his portrayal of Noir 2, he explained how the character differed from Black Noir 1. He described Noir 2 as someone who would eagerly follow any order and fully commit to a task, but then immediately question the morality of it, thinking, ‘Wow, that was messed up. Maybe we shouldn’t have done that. I’m having second thoughts.’
The actor who plays Black Noir on The Boys explained how he developed the character’s unique voice, feeling certain he’d land on the perfect sound. For him, adding layers to Noir came easily. He described taking the lines, experimenting with them, and letting his instincts guide him, drawing on his understanding of the character. He felt a natural connection to both the dialogue and the character himself, allowing Noir’s personality to emerge organically.
The Boys Season 5 is now streaming on Prime Video.
