Be warned, this article reveals key plot points from Season 2, Episode 8 of Daredevil: Born Again. Fans have noticed Jon Bernthal’s Punisher isn’t appearing in the new season, and there are a few possible reasons why. Frank Castle, played by Bernthal, and Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) have a history in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Punisher first appeared in Season 2 of the original Daredevil series, and his story has always been connected to Daredevil’s timeline within the MCU.
As a critic, I have to say the contrast between these two characters was genuinely captivating. Seeing Jon Bernthal’s Punisher get his own series was a smart move, and the payoff when he reunited with Charlie Cox’s Daredevil was fantastic. Season one of Daredevil: Born Again really solidified their chemistry as one of the best duos the MCU has ever given us. The plot kicked off with Daredevil investigating whether the Punisher had anything to do with the death of White Tiger, which ultimately led Frank Castle to unleash everything he had on Mayor Fisk’s efforts to shut down vigilantes.
As a critic, I was keeping a close eye on the cast of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, and it was great to see familiar faces from the first season return – characters like Karen Page and Vanessa Fisk were welcome sights. We even got glimpses of Foggy Nelson through flashbacks, and of course, Bullseye. Given his history with Daredevil – appearing in the original Netflix show and season one of Born Again – everyone, myself included, was anticipating the return of the Punisher. It just felt natural, considering their shared story.
With the release of the Daredevil: Born Again season finale, it’s clear that Jon Bernthal’s Punisher doesn’t make an appearance in the show’s second season. While the series didn’t reveal the character’s current location, it did offer hints about what he’s been up to, and fans should find out more soon.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 Set Up The Punisher’s Next Appearance
Look, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher wasn’t a huge presence in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again, but when he was on screen, he absolutely delivered. He was crucial to Daredevil surviving that ambush at Matt’s place – Frank Castle basically saved the day. And the show really highlighted him at the end. It was fascinating to see the AVTF practically worshipping the Punisher and begging him to join their ranks, but Castle, true to form, completely shut them down. He wasn’t interested, and that felt perfectly in character.
After being captured, the Punisher was imprisoned in one of Wilson Fisk’s secret, unlawful cells, alongside other inmates like the Swordsman, who Daredevil saved in season 2. However, Matt didn’t rescue the Punisher because, in a scene after the credits of Daredevil: Born Again season 1, Frank cleverly tricked a guard and used the opportunity to overpower him and break free.
In season 2, episode 3 of Daredevil: Born Again, Daredevil and Karen ended up hiding out at the Punisher’s place. They learned Frank was out doing his typical vigilantism around New York City. It was odd that the Punisher left instead of teaming up with Daredevil and Karen to fight Mayor Fisk, but the reason for his departure will likely be explained soon.
The Punisher’s Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Absence Should Be Explained Next Week
Though Jon Bernthal wasn’t in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, he’ll reprise his role as Frank Castle very soon after the season ends. The new Marvel Studios special, The Punisher: One Last Kill, premieres on Disney+ on May 12th and will reveal what Frank has been doing since we last saw him. The story focuses on Frank trying to find a life where he doesn’t need to seek revenge, which may explain why he wasn’t involved in the events of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 and suggest he’s been keeping a low profile before getting pulled back into action.
The upcoming comic, The Punisher: One Last Kill, will connect Frank Castle’s appearance in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again to his return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31st. The movie is expected to show conflict between the Punisher and Spider-Man, mirroring his dynamic with Daredevil, as hinted at in the trailer. Marvel plans to feature the Punisher in several projects following his absence from the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, giving fans more of the character.
