James Gunn’s DC Studios Superman Series Officially Casts Superboy

Fans can look forward to Superboy joining Season 3! Warner Bros. Animation revealed on Monday that Darren Criss will provide the voice for the character. The new season premieres on Adult Swim on June 13th and will be available on HBO Max the next day.

Warner Bros. hasn’t said which character Criss will voice. But, considering Season 3 of My Adventures with Superman will be based on storylines from the 1990s, it’s likely he’ll be playing Conner Kent—the teenage clone of Superman who first appeared during that era.

The initial design of Superboy in My Adventures with Superman appears to be heavily influenced by Conner Kent’s look, as you can see in the image below.

Who Is Superboy?

Let’s talk Superboy, as we see him in My Adventures With Superman. While the show doesn’t give us a full backstory right away, for those unfamiliar, the character originated in the comics back in 1993. Created by writer Karl Kesel and artist Tom Grummett, Conner Kent first appeared in The Adventures of Superman #500. That issue was a big deal, kicking off a storyline called “Reign of the Storyline” and introducing a whole team of Supermen – including, eventually, our Conner!

Superboy is essentially a younger, less experienced version of Superman, created through cloning. He offers a glimpse into what Superman might have been like without the strong upbringing he received from the Kents. Initially, Superboy is portrayed as arrogant and self-centered, seeking attention and romantic encounters. However, he ultimately demonstrates true heroic qualities. With guidance from Superman and experience gained from working with teams like Young Justice and the Teen Titans, he grows into a more mature, modest, and thoughtful hero.

My Adventures With Superman Finally Returns

It’s been a while in the making, but My Adventures with Superman is continuing! The show was originally developed before James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios, leading to worries it might be cancelled. However, Gunn actually enjoys the series, and it will continue under the DC Studios umbrella. Starting with Season 3, both Gunn and Safran are listed as executive producers.

Season 3 of My Adventures with Superman finds Clark fully embracing his role as Superman and accepting his Kryptonian heritage – he’s ready for a more settled life. However, Lois, now the Planet’s lead reporter, isn’t quite on the same page. Jimmy has grown from a freelance photographer into a well-known journalist, but he’s still a little nervous about the attention he’s getting from Kara Zor-El, a newcomer trying to adjust to life on Earth. This close-knit group will face powerful new villains who will challenge Superman, put their future at risk, and strain their relationships. Will these heroes be able to protect tomorrow before it destroys today?

The animated series My Adventures with Superman features Jack Quaid (known from The Boys) as Clark Kent, Alice Lee (People We Meet On Vacation) as Lois Lane, Ishmel Sahid (Jury Duty) as Jimmy Olsen, and Kiana Madeira (Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair) as Kara Zor-El. Brendan Clogher and co-executive producer are also the showrunners for the series.

My Adventures with Superman returns on June 13.
