Many consider ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,’ directed by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, to be the strongest film in the series. Originally planned as the final adventure for Indiana Jones, the movie successfully blends action, heart, and humor, largely thanks to its excellent cast – particularly Sean Connery’s memorable performance as Indy’s father.

Many popular film franchises like Marvel, DC, and Star Wars frequently use large casts that include characters created with special effects. It’s surprising how characters like Chewbacca, the droids, or Krypto can connect with audiences. However, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade primarily depends on the strong connection between its human actors to bring its complex and moving story to life.

Although their stories are quite different, Indiana Jones, as played by Harrison Ford, has surprising similarities to James Bond. A unique situation arose in The Temple of Doom when Sean Connery agreed to play Ford’s father, despite their relatively small age difference of only twelve years – he was primarily interested in working with director Steven Spielberg, as he explained in a 1989 Today Show interview. Given both actors’ strong presence, the set could have easily become competitive. However, Connery and Ford chose to work together as partners, and their collaboration is instantly visible in their first scene together.

The actors expertly balance action and comedy, making their characters both heroic and funny. Once Indy appears on the scene, he’s portrayed as someone who’s both childlike and world-weary, like a son constantly frustrating his father. Sean Connery’s character, meanwhile, is a surprisingly capable fighter, a detached father, and a refined academic shocked by Indy’s rough methods. Through moments like recalling a story about Charlemagne to defeat a plane and his past relationship with Elsa, Connery’s performance reveals everything about how Indy developed into the beloved hero fans know.

It’s uncertain whether Lucas or Spielberg originally conceived the core idea, but it was brilliant. The heart of the film isn’t the Holy Grail itself, but the relationship between the two Joneses. Both Indiana and his father dedicated their lives to seeking wealth and recognition through archaeology. However, Indy ultimately retrieves the Grail to rescue his father, who then urges him to abandon it to save his own life. These emotional beats feel earned thanks to the writing, but it’s the performances of Harrison Ford and Sean Connery that truly elevate the film to legendary status.

In a 1989 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Harrison Ford praised the decision to cast Sean Connery, saying he was eager to work with him like any other actor. Ford also pointed out that they shared similar appearances and personalities, which helped make their on-screen relationship believable. The strength of the film ultimately came down to the characters’ development. While the movie’s mix of action, comedy, and drama could have easily felt silly, the actors’ dedication brought genuine emotion to the story instead.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade Was Very Different Until Sean Connery Came Along

By 1988, Spielberg wanted to work with his close friend again on another Indiana Jones film, hoping it would be a more enjoyable project. He’d been emotionally exhausted after making The Color Purple and Empire of the Sun, as detailed in Joseph McBride’s biography of Spielberg, and needed something lighthearted. However, developing the story proved challenging. Several ideas were considered, ranging from Indiana Jones battling the undead to a villain based in Africa that was even more problematic than the character in The Temple of Doom.

One reason he signed on to direct the films was because of this. It’s therefore understandable that he wanted Sean Connery to play Henry Jones, Sr., as Lucas had pictured him as a very elderly man. However, Connery wasn’t thrilled with the initial portrayal, feeling the character was too weak. Spielberg and Lucas listened to his feedback and added more forceful qualities, turning him into a more active and adventurous figure. Connery famously came up with the line, “She talks in her sleep” on the spot, and he strongly insisted that Spielberg keep the detail about both Joneses having a relationship with Elsa, even though Spielberg wanted to remove it.

Spielberg has stated he actually learned more about the technical side of filmmaking while working on the Indiana Jones movies than he did on Jaws. While The Last Crusade showcases impressive action and stunning locations like the Treasury at Petra, what truly makes it a classic isn’t the spectacle. It’s the actors who bring depth and believability to their larger-than-life characters. While Sean Connery and Harrison Ford deliver particularly strong performances, the film’s success is due to the contributions of the entire cast.

The Supporting Cast Cemented The Last Crusade’s Legacy

There’s a strong case to be made for how important that movie was. It actually helped make certain parts of The Last Crusade much more effective. We see the return of familiar faces – Denholm Elliott as Marcus Brody and John Rhys-Davies as Sallah – both characters from the original film. They function as the family Indy chooses, and that connection resonates with audiences because we already know and care about them. Unlike Indy’s father, they view him the way viewers do: as a daring and impressive adventurer.

The Last Crusade boasts some of the strongest performances in the entire film series. Kevork Malikyan is compelling as Kazim, the leader of a group sworn to protect the Holy Grail, opposing both the heroes and villains. Julian Glover and Alison Doody shine as Walter Donovan and Elsa, initially appearing as Indy’s allies but later revealed to be working with the Nazis. Their acting is so convincing that the surprise of this betrayal, whether anticipated or not, doesn’t diminish the impact. Michael Byrne is equally memorable as Standartenführer Ernst Vogel, a wonderfully detestable SS officer.

No matter what fans think, The Last Crusade is special because of its warmth and funny moments. It still has plenty of action and exciting scenes, but it’s arguably the film where the actors truly shine. Sean Connery and Harrison Ford make a fantastic team, and they complement each other and the rest of the cast perfectly. While fans may disagree on which Indiana Jones movie is best, it’s hard to deny that The Last Crusade has the strongest cast of the entire series.
