Many consider Dark to be one of the best science fiction shows Netflix has ever produced, and it begins with a deceptively simple line that fundamentally changes how you think about time. The show truly is a masterpiece, with every detail carefully planned. Even the opening quote perfectly encapsulates the series’ core themes from start to finish.
“We trust that time is linear.”
Netflix’s sci-fi series Dark is unique among popular shows in that it only has three seasons. Despite its relatively short length, it’s known for its incredibly complex and thought-provoking take on time travel. While it uses familiar time travel ideas, the show executes them so well that nearly every episode feels expertly crafted.
After finishing the Netflix series, it’s hard not to think about its ideas on whether time repeats itself and how little we truly understand it.
Dark’s Opening Narration Questions The Rules Of Our Perceived Sense Of Time
Typically, a TV show like Netflix’s Dark unfolds with a clear beginning, middle, and end – each episode building towards a final conclusion. This progression mirrors how we experience time, as things naturally become more disordered and complex as time goes on.
I’ve always been captivated by shows that dare to be different, and Dark truly stands out. It doesn’t follow the typical sci-fi formula at all! Instead, it loves to throw you for loops, deliberately messing with the idea that time moves in a straight line. Right from the beginning, the show sets the stage with a narrator who explains how our understanding of time is actually pretty limited and flawed. He basically lays out the groundwork for everything that’s about to get wonderfully complicated, and it’s brilliant.
We generally think of time as a straight line, moving forward forever at a steady pace. However, the idea of a clear separation between the past, present, and future might be an illusion. Instead of following one after another, yesterday, today, and tomorrow are actually linked together in a continuous loop. Ultimately, everything in the universe is interconnected.
The above quote brings a unique spin on one of Albert Einstein’s most iconic quotes from a letter in which he tried to console the family of his deceased friend, Michele Besso. Highlighting how the difference between the past, the present, and the future is “only a stubbornly persistent illusion,” Einstein wrote:
He’s gone on ahead of me, leaving this unusual world, but that doesn’t really matter. For those who understand physics, the idea of a clear difference between the past, present, and future is just a lasting trick our minds play on us.
While Einstein explored the mysteries of time with deep thought, the Netflix series Dark presents a much darker and more pessimistic view. The show focuses on the idea that everything is predetermined and that the lines between cause and effect become increasingly unclear.
Beyond the unsettling idea that time might be a fixed path, the excellent time travel series on Netflix suggests we should accept both the good and bad things that happen to us. If everything is already determined, and the past, present, and future exist simultaneously, then every choice and every loss becomes something to embrace.
Similar to how Einstein used a personal loss to deeply consider the nature of death, the show Dark explores the idea that finding peace and genuine freedom comes from realizing our lives are part of something larger than ourselves, something we may not fully understand.
Dark’s Genius Portrayal Of Time Travel Remains Unbeatable
Beyond its clever use of science and religion, and its intricate family connections, Dark is a powerfully emotional story about grief and finding your place in a confusing world. The show’s striking visuals and Ben Frost’s incredible music further enhance the dramatic experience, drawing you completely into the story.
One of the biggest strengths of Dark is that it was allowed to finish its story properly. Unlike 1899, which was canceled too soon, Dark had the chance to fully realize the creators’ vision. The show also features outstanding casting, with actors convincingly portraying the same characters at different ages across the various timelines.
There are a lot of great science fiction TV shows out there, but most of them have some weaknesses. Netflix’s Dark, though, is a standout – a nearly flawless drama that consistently impresses throughout its three seasons.
